Bell housing interchangeability

Sherwood, I couldn't help adding my comments regarding you fitting an 8" clutch to your TC. I fitted an MGB (8") diaphragm clutch assembly to my TC special. It was fitted to a Wolsely 4/44 (TD TF ) flywheel. The clutch depth is 1/2" shallower than the standard TC Clutch and required no modification to TC bell housing. I know you are looking at a later bell housing (TD/TF), but the extra 1/2" clearance may help and avoid doing any internal mods to the bell housing. I had no trouble compensating for the extra clearance at the thrust face on the MGB clutch, ( the linkage had to be modified on my car as I moved the engine to the rear by 4'' ) as normally using a TC bell housing it would only consist of modifying the chain length , but how it would apply to a TD/TF box I have no idea. There are a few points to watch for with this conversion. I found out the hard way. Although the bolt holes positions are the same in the later flywheel match the MGB clutch, I had to relocate the dowels in the flywheel to suit it. With the larger flywheel, I found it was necessary to assemble the flywheel to the crankshaft before fitting the shaft to the engine ( which may be a problem if you are not rebulding the engine ), as the fly wheel will not pass through the inside diameter of the flange of the block. With regard to the 2 bolt starter motor to suit the later flywheel, using the TC block, I had to grind larger, the outer side of the starter opening in the block, to give sufficient clearance to be able to assemble the starter motor to the block. Now whether it would be the same for all TC blocks, I do no know, but it was so with mine. Alan Griffin, TC 4120 TC 4406 TD ---------- No virus found in this outgoing message. Sherwood, Chip Old wrote extensively about this mod in the December 1982 TSO.....If you don't have this issure, let me know and I'lll copy it for you....one more reason to have the TSO-CD.
