Bell housing interchangability

Learned listers, I hope to install 8" clutch on car in anticipation of power upgrade. Can the later bell housing, with the larger clutch and pressure plate be installed on XPAGs originally designed for 7.25 clutch? Will the gear boxes be spaced properly and the like? What other questions am i neglecting to ask, or must anticipate, before i undertake such a swap? I know TC ring gear is different from TD/F. Not sure what other issues I need to be addressing. thanks, Sherwood Parker TC, TF, Arnolt Coupe Tempe, AZ USA [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi Sherwood, Yes the late TD/TF 8" bellhousing can be made to work on a TC. The bolt pattern is the same so the eight bolts fit to the TC box. However, the locating spigot that bears against the outer race of the ball bearing on the TD/TF bellhousing is smaller in diameter than the TC. Therefore you need to weld and machine a larger diameter spigot on the TD/TF bellhousing. Or machine a groove and insert a steel ring at the correct location to suit the TC box. In addition, the TC clutch cross shaft is 5/8" diameter , the TD/TF is 3/4" , so you need to machine down the TD/TF clutch shaft outer end to 5/8" on the end and cut a new keyway to use the TC clutch operating lever. Down side of the 8" flywheel and clutch is the greater weight and you must use a TF ringgear, therefore a TF starter, which means a new remote starter switch. No problem with gearbox spacing etc. All in all, a lot of work and not worth the effort. Why not use a 7 1/2" diaphram clutch? Better holding power, less weight, no changes to bell housing or starter etc. Same bolt pattern as the TC 7 1/4" clutch, just add two new alignment dowel pins in the TC flywheel as the diaphram clutch has 3 located pins at 120 degrees, the TC has two at 180 degrees. Much easier and the diaphram clutch is better at high engine revs. I have a 7 1/2" diaphram clutch on my race TC and road TC.
