Yahoo groups - dying?

Post by Graham Knight » Thu Oct 17, 2019 12:29 am

Dear All, Another group I belong to has been notified that Yahoo are going to greatly downgrade the "Groups" system. They have been told they must retrieve all their files and images by October 28th which will otherwise be deleted. (See https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/SLN31010.html?impressions=true&guccounter=1). Thereafter it seems a "group" will be essentially an email list. Has anything similar been notified to this group? Graham

As one of the 'backup moderators' of the group I hadn't noticed this, but need to look closer. Perhaps it is time to make the rest of the transition to the http://www.mg-tabc.org/ forum started to replace this Yahoo Groups group several years ago.  Thoughts? There has been virtually no activity in the ancillary parts of this Yahoo group recently.  https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/mg-tabc/files, where items for sale, technical info, etcetera are posted. One of the liveliest, interesting, and relevant MG forums I see regularly is the Triple M register (prewar MG Midgets, Magnas, Magnettes)  http://www.triple-mregister.org/. The other active forum I see is https://www.mgexp.com/forum/t-series-and-prewar-forum.46/.  Most postings seem to be TD and TF oriented, but it has the activity level and spirit that this Yahoo forum had many years ago. What are the opinions of the group on what our move should be?

#ygrps-yiv-1368692442 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} I can highly recommend Groups.io as an alternative to Yahoo. The MGA Twin Cam group recently migrated all of our files, photos, etc to Groups.io and it works a lot better than Yahoo. Many of our group members had problems seeing or posting photos or were able to see something on their PC but not on their phone or iPad or vise versa, the io site seemed to eliminate most if not all of these issues. I also belong to two machinery groups, Logan lathes and Burke Millrite mills that transitioned from Yahoo to io and everyone is pleased.  I believe the guy who started Groups.io had originally developed the Groups format for Yahoo. My vote would be to use the TABC forum. The site is already setup for technical documents and it s not that difficult to add pictures to the forum post.

I can t think of any other section, it already has all we need (I think)

If the group wants to migrate to the forum on our web site, the forum software can be upgraded to make it more streamlined and easy to use. Over 92,000 messages on the Yahoo group will be gone when they shut down, but fortunately I have archived the Yahoo database and will be working on a way to make the decades of technical information available on the TABC web site. It's a long and difficult task but well worth it in the end. If the preference is for an email group like Yahoo, Groups.io is the best solution. Our club has been using it for some time and it works like Yahoo should have. Several other groups I've told about it have reported good results as well. - Steve Simmons, TC8975 On 10/17/2019 8:10 AM, norman verona norman@frenchblat.com [mg-tabc] wrote:

#ygrps-yiv-1366015793 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} Norm, What I like about the group messages is that they turn up immediately in my inbox in sub-folders I have set up for each of my groups since I opt for individual messages rather than a daily digest. I find it a lot easier to navigate my email on my phone than going to the forum on the TABC website. Yahoo groups are NOT shutting down. You can read more about the changes at https://help.yahoo.com/ , then search for SLN31010 You will still be able to post messages as we have but attachments will no longer be allowed. I enabled that capability when I became a moderator for this group. Before that attachments were not enabled anyway. It was just an email group and that has worked well for those that prefer that medium. I have never been a fan of Yahoo groups. The decision to use it was made by my predecessors. If people want to continue to use it they can, or they can use Steve's very excellent web site, but the content on the MG-TABC Group as I understand it is NOT going away, nor is the sky going to tumble on our heads. If the majority of the group wants to migrate to groups.io I will support that and help if needed (or wanted). So voice your opinion and we can make it happen or leave it alone. --Mike moderator MG-TABC On 10/17/19 10:38 AM, Steve S mail@mgnuts.com [mg-tabc] wrote:
