Post by Norman Verona » Sun Oct 13, 2019 9:28 am

All those in the UK, if you have never heard of BABB they stock Whitworth (as well as UNF/UNC/Metric (but not 1.0 pitch)) fixings.

They have branches at:

Branches

Barnsley

Mansfield

Hull

Scunthorpe

Leeds

West Midlands

Brighouse

Preston

Doncaster

Rochdale

Leicester

The prices are right.

The metric fine 1.0mm pitch was standard . In the 1920s! It was later altered to 1.5mm pitch.

No.  1.0 is super fine pitch in one metric size, fine in another, and standard in others.  Fineness of pitch is dependent on size that goes with it.

I want to bolt my engine to a stand. Are the 4 bell housing bolts and the tapped holes in the block strong enough? It doesn't look much . I need to avoid any use of the holes in the alloy sump, as I will need to rotate the engine, and remove it. Any advice welcome. Graham Sent from my iPad

hi Norman - they are called BAPP and seem to be suppliers to the structural industry, I could not see anything other than metric... The bellhousing bolts in question are 8 x 1.0mm, as are the majority in the XPAG (lists are available, no need to repeat here) and I have everything, either with modern 13mm AF heads (only a tad smaller than the 5/16" BSF size) or with correct heads (at greater expense). I do of course have a "cottage industry" called "Mad Metrics" which many of you have used. For these engine stands bolts 90mm long are needed, and the longest I have are 80mm for the rocker pedestals. Therefore, either studs will have to be used, or I can re-thread some HT socket cap head bolts (my preferred option). ocTagonally Roger

Roger et all,

Sorry it is BABB and they do stock Whitworth. I know because I bought some last Thursday.

As far as I know Roger is the best source for MG metric threaded fixings.

I m back there in the morning, I ll ask what threads they stock although I think we only would want Rogers Mad metrics and Whitworth (maybe a few BA)

Roger et all,

Sorry it is BABB and they do stock Whitworth. I know because I bought some last Thursday.

As far as I know Roger is the best source for MG metric threaded fixings.

I m back there in the morning, I ll ask what threads they stock although I think we only would want Rogers Mad metrics and Whitworth (maybe a few BA)

hi Norman - they are called BAPP and seem to be suppliers to the structural industry, I could not see anything other than metric...

No.  1.0 is super fine pitch in one metric size, fine in another, and standard in others.  Fineness of pitch is dependent on size that goes with it.

Re: Whitworth nut and bolt supplier

Guys,

BAPP is a trade group of independent fasteners suppliers https://www.bapp.co.uk/

hi Norman - they are called BAPP and seem to be suppliers to the structural industry, I could not see anything other than metric...

The metric fine 1.0mm pitch was standard . In the 1920s! It was later altered to 1.5mm pitch.

No.  1.0 is super fine pitch in one metric size, fine in another, and standard in others.  Fineness of pitch is dependent on size that goes with it.

No, 1.25 is Standard Metric,   1.0 is Standard Metric Fine.

Standard Metric Fine is generally what people call 1.25mm.  I think the threads in question are 8 x 1.00.  Not standard, but often can be found.

The 1mm thread is no problem,  It's standard Metric Fine thread.  Easily available, bur not with BSF/Whit heads of course.
