Serious backfire

I beg the wisdom of the group.. On a relatively high speed run my TC started backfiring when under load. Easing the throttle smoothed it out somewhat but when I put my foot back in the backfire came back. Intermittent, and with varying intensity. I'm thinking condenser. Your thoughts please? Searching for an intake leak, as I recall, involves an unignited propane bottle wafted around the carp bodies...have I got that right? Tips? Also at the ends of the intake manifold, where the end caps are pressed in. Some people use liquid, some use gas. If through the carbs, a lean condition could cause a spark plug to overheat and detonate the mixture before the intake valve closes. If you remove the dashpots and pull the pistons and one has carbon deposits on the inlet side you have at least narrowed it down to two cylinders.
