AW: [mg-tabc] Vapour Lock....again

Post by Wim Jetten » Mon Jul 15, 2019 8:13 am

I never used to have vapour lock problems, after I had fitted a heatshield (by Moss) and 5mm insulating gaskets years ago.

However this summer I had a few times great difficulty to restart a very hot engine.

I did change the floats during last winter. Replaced the original style brass floats by so-called stay-up floats. This might have reduced the height of the fuel level in the bowls. I think I am going to increase the fuel level a bit now to see if that has any effect on the hot starting behaviour.

If choking does not help start, try tickling the carbs.  Your fuel height at bridge may be set low.

Listers, I was out for a run to the shops today in the TC and was bitten by vapour lock again on the return trip. This is an ongoing issue for me when ever I get stuck in traffic or do a nice run (20 minutes or more) and then a brief stop. I'm used to this but it seems to be happening more often lately, I THINK the timing and mixture are correct, but that being said it does seem a bit down on power. I digress. Has anyone fitted heat shields or MGB style spacers between the carb body and the intake manifold? With what results? I have a good rad, water wetter, four blade fan. Runs great as long as I keep moving. Seems the issue is when the heat from the manifold(s) sinks into the carb bodies while stopped. I await the wisdom of the list Cheers, Ross

I have Fuel Bowl Koozies that are working well contact me off List and we can chat -----Original Message----- From: Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com>; arm arm@telus.net> Sent: Mon, Jul 15, 2019 10:30 am Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Vapour Lock....again   TC 2911 is set up with spacers under the carbs and a home made heat shield above a ceramic coated exhaust manifold. While this is helpful, on a good hot day, heat soak starting may require a bit of choke for smooth running for a short while. The car is also black and that warm bonnet doesn't help things either. Good advice Tom! With respect to fuel, I used to go 'low cost wins' but after some mixed engine performance, one station gets the business, costs slightly more, but engine performance has been stabilized for all vehicles.    The 47 Packard , always prone to vapor lock, even starts, albeit reluctantly. A sure fix is a can of starting fluid, always start after a jolt or two in the air intake.   (used on trips over 200 miles.)  Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn MI SA2333 Tickford, SA2184 Saloon. -----Original Message----- From: twilson@indy.rr.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Mon, Jul 15, 2019 10:01 am Subject: [mg-tabc] Re: Vapour Lock....again Try another tank of fuel before you start fiddling with everything.  Test the easy stuff before getting a not the complex. Wim,

Take the top and piston off, the fuel level should be just under the top of the jet. You should be able to do minor adjustments by bending the arm.

I mounted a Pump in the back like an MGTF and pushed fuel through a dummy pump on firewall on my TD as if you look at the firewall arrangement that pump is in the hottest part of the car both on TC & TD -----Original Message----- From: 'Andrew P. Yes, THet are usuall 9 / 10 mm and you normally have to fit longer studs. But they work just as well at half thickness, so I just pop them on the lathe and machiened them to about 5mm, and used a thin washer under a slightlythinner nut, and find no need for longer studs. From memory they are around 9 - 10mm (3/8 ins) thick. They are available from Burlen Fuel systems and eBay. Regards Peter Cole. #ygrps-yiv-1988112854 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} I made Coozies for the float bowls.  They are out of Muffler Wrap and half-round on the back half of the bowls held in place with 3 strands of .020 safety wire.  You have to look for them to see them but they worked. The consensus opinion seems to be that the vapor lock issues are largely due to modern fuel formulation, at least in the U.S.
For me, Installing a secondary (mine is primary) modern fuel pump has made vapor lock much less of a problem, but not a total solution. No Room for spacers, which cause the air cleaners to hit the bonnet.
I look forward to trying the half-cozies described by Sherwood Parker.
