Rent a Wheel and Originality

Post by motionwear » Sun May 26, 2019 3:32 pm

Peter needs to rent a steering wheel; I need to buy an original 3 spoke.  Unrestored is fine as I can restore it for TC2040.  I use a nylon material fluid dip to cover it - closest thing to original there is.  If you have one you'll part with, contact me off list. Clive - here's another point of originality - tyres!  I found an article in the June 23, 1948 issue of The Motor about a new tread design for the Dunlop tyre.  They changed from the rectangular serrated pattern to a zigzag style.  Most all of us have probably thought of the zigzag tread B5 as the original tyre for a TC.  According to this article, that tire is 'correct' only for TCs made through the end of 1948. So if you're a stickler for originality, or just like the trivia involved in originality details, if your TC chassis number is TC7503 or higher, a zigzag B5 tread design is correct.  Earlier TCs get the rectangular notched ones. Tom Wilson Zionsville IN Kimber0251@gmail.com  PS.  Got a couple days further behind on interiors Friday.  Drill bit broke, went through an index finger while working on 2 pairs of bucket seats for Peter Zernial.  No major damage, just a very sore and unusable finger for a couple days.  I should know better than to use cheap drill bits - threw them all away!

The Dunlop B5 is now not produced as such, but is produced as the Ensign B5 tyre. The earlier tyre was the Dunlop F4 tread pattern shown in many TC Factory photos of course. This is now produced under the Waymaster trademark as the Waymaster 30 in a suitable 450x19 size. According to the PC Doom-mongers Original specification Air is no longer available either, but surely someone can supply a low Carbon Dioxide compressed air for us purists ? Think there is at least one original wheel handing on the wall in my Mom's garage that needs to be restored. I will check tomorrow when I go over there.
