TC Fan

Post by Peter Cole » Sat May 04, 2019 8:45 am

Hi Folks
I've just been looking at fitting an MGB 7- bladed plastic fan to my TC to improve the cooling. I thought it was a pretty simple modification. Certainly the overall diameter is no problem and the fixing centres allow it to bolt straight onto the water pump pulley. However that puts the plastic fan about 3/4 inch further forward than the original, enough to foul the radiator. It's tempting just to turn the fan over which would solve the interference problem but then the aerofoil profile of the blades would in the wrong orientation.
Has anyone done this? What's secret?
Regards & thanks
Peter Cole.

I filed a few thou off the tips of the blades that touched the rad (not all did) and adjusted the rad side support bars for a few more thou clearance. Still ok after 3 years. Roger Bateman

Peter, Big Problem, but check with the Antipodean Lads, what with their water going down their plugholes in the opposite direction, and being upside down all the time, they might wrangled have a sort of Left Handed version . . . Ok, well it is my birthday, so I might get away with it. Seriously though, unless there's already something wrong with the car, such as mistiming, blocked radiator, blocked "that awkward little hole in the back of the block" sort of thing, or, as I have met, the brakes locking on ! then I'd expect only in quite extreme conditions should you have any sort of overheating problem not fixable by adjusting the car to the conditions, eg altitude and fuel mix. I didn't know there was a problem, so I just bolted the MGB fan on and started driving, about 5 years and no problems. I did it partly as a perceived safety measure. Bright yellow plastic blades seem safer then black metal ones. There should be plenty of room.

Make sure you do not have a spacer between fan blades and pulley.  That is for TD only.

I didn't know there was a problem, so I just bolted the MGB fan on and started driving, about 5 years and no problems. I did it partly as a perceived safety measure. Bright yellow plastic blades seem safer then black metal ones. Dan Harmer

I filed a few thou off the tips of the blades that touched the rad (not all did) and adjusted the rad side support bars for a few more thou clearance. Still ok after 3 years. Roger Bateman

Hi I understand there are 2 yellow plastic fans for the MGB, the correct one being the one for a 72/73 model though I don't know what the difference is.Have you had a problem with the temp? A couple of years ago when driving uphill in slow moving traffic due to road works, and a temperature of 35 degrees, the temp in the TB started going up to 90-95 degrees, once clear of traffic it dropped back down to its normal running temp of around 80 degrees. I thought about fitting the 7 bladed fan but found my TB still had just the original 2 blades. fitting the extra blade from a TC dropped the normal running temp down to 70 degrees. I haven't been in any slow moving uphill traffic on a hot day since converting to 4 blades to see the effect under these conditions but would not expect it to be any problem.RegardsMikeMG TB80 the 80th anniversary Event for MG TB Owners 1939-2019

Hi Folks I've just been looking at fitting an MGB 7- bladed plastic fan to my TC to improve the cooling. Regards & thanksPeter Cole.

Hi, Thanks for all of the responses to my question about the TC fan. Most were helpful, some not so much! Thanks Clive, happy birthday. It seems there are two different MGB fans, one that fits and then the one I have. For those that asked, no I don't have an over heating problem. I've never even had a hot restart problem. It was just that I had the bonnet and the rad off the car to deal with an oil leak from the front of the crank so it seemed like an ideal opportunity to fit the fan I've had hanging on a nail on my garage wall for years. I'm happily going back to the original fan now. Looking at the plastic fan it would fairly easy to modify it to fit, but I'll leave that for another day when I have nothing better to do. I just can't imagine when that be! Regards and thanks again. Peter Cole
