My sick TC

Post by Bob Sleeper » Mon Apr 15, 2019 1:27 pm

My 48 TC is having some problems. Number one is the car will start but as soon as I put a load on it ( release the clutch ) it starts cutting out (carburetor maybe?). Number 2, is it will start but the ignition lite doesn t come on, which implies that it s running on the battery not the generator. I need to get her fixed because, unfortunately, I need to sell her. Looking for help or suggestions Thanks in advance for your time on this. Bob Sleeper

Thanks Bud,  it looked like he wasn’t getting much response from the group and hoped we could connect him up with resources local to him

Bob Sleeper, I have been pondering your car's symptoms to come up with a most or more likely scenario. Here are some items to check as I couldn't come up with a scenario. The two symptoms seem unrelated but I don't know. I would sort out the ignition light not coming on first. It should come on with ignition turned on with engine not running. Check for good bulb, loose or broken wires. Disconnect and tape off wires separating the generator. Once you have the ignition sorted out, start the engine and let us know if the engine can now handle the load. I'll assume the engine still can not handle the load. Many possibilities may cause this, ignition, mechanical and/or carburetor. I would check the easy mechanical first: check valve lash. Pull spark plugs and check compression at cranking speeds. Move onto the ignition system. Plugs good? Good spark on all? Ignition timing at 0 degrees or up to 10 degrees before top dead center initially? Lastly, (my opinion only) check the carburetor. I find carburetion to usually be the least problematic. Since you describe engine cut out on low speed load, I would start by cleaning the dash pots and observing the butterfly valves. I am assuming the carb bowls are full of gasoline. Pull the carb bowl lids off to check. If not, then go through the fuel system. Please let us know your progress. Tim hits on the best points - focus first on spark and compression before worrying about fuel.  Having said that, I had a similar problem in Houston.  Cost some aggrevation but I found that one of the nibs on the little brackets that hold the fork inside the carb bowl lid on one side had broken off, preventing the valve from fully closing.  It would idle as long as the jet opening was really small but as soon as I'd put my foot in it that carb would flood and so no power.  I've also seen a hot but failing coil, a failing condensor, clogged fuel lines/filters, and vacuum leaks cause similar symptoms (not all in MGs....).

Re: My sick TC

Post by diecuts2333 » Wed Apr 17, 2019 11:28 am

Hi all,  The problem may be what happened to my TC a few years back.   I bought and installed new points from Moss for the distributor.  The spring-loaded contact strip that contacts the distributor cam was a mottled blue color.  It was too hardened.  The spring pressure was way too high against the cam.  It cracked the nib on the end that made contact with the distributor cam. At low RPMS, idled perfectly.  The broken nib stayed strong on the cam, still opened the points.    When the RPMs were increased, the cracked nib flattened out,  the points came together,  and shorted out the engine each time.    Drove me crazy for awhile.     I finally switched out distributors, and the problem went away.   Taking apart the distributor carefully revealed the broken nib.  Improbable..?      Anything can, and will happen, with MGs.....:}     Moss did replace the point set no charge......:} Cheers, Lee Jacobsen, Dearborn, MI  TA2969 Tickford... -----Original Message----- From: Tim Bloomfield ferricsteed@yahoo.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mgtc mgtc@usaviator.net>; Bob Sleeper sleeperbob@gmail.com>; mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com>; Rick rbfisk@comcast.net> Sent: Wed, Apr 17, 2019 11:06 am Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] My sick TC Bob Sleeper, I have been pondering your car's symptoms to come up with a most or more likely scenario. Tim Bloomfield TB0613 (Now Dismantled) Louisiana --------------------------------------------

Tim Bloomfield TB0613 (Now Dismantled) Louisiana -------------------------------------------- On Wed, 4/17/19, Rick rbfisk@comcast.net [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote: Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] My sick TC To: mgtc@usaviator.net, "Bob Sleeper" sleeperbob@gmail.com>, "mg-tabc" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2019, 2:28 AM                           Thanks Bud,  it looked like he wasn t getting much response from the group and hoped we could connect him up with resources local to himOn April 16, 2019 at 12:22 PM mgtc@usaviator.net wrote:   Rick, Bob's in Pueblo, Colorado.   Bud   Get Outlook for Android   On Tue, Apr 16, 2019 at 3:52 AM -0600, "Rick rbfisk@comcast.net [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:      Where are you located Bob? Nothing to offer regarding the ignition light but my first go-to for lack of power under load is the condenser. Try bypassing it with a known good one to see whether that makes any difference. I ve had a couple fail on different cars, including the TC last year. Dave TC9964 Aberdeen, sunny Scotland Sent from my iPhone
