Diesel in Petrol!

By asking this question I m admitting to an act of gross stupidity. I ll not describe how I managed to put nine litres of diesel into the tank of my TC, which already contained about 25 litres of petrol. It is too embarrassing. I probably should have arranged for the tank to be drained while still on the forecourt of the petrol station, but I decided to drive the one and a half miles home. I just made it.

On the basis that diesel is denser than petrol I let the tank settle over night and then syphoned about 15 litres from the bottom of the tank. I then pumped another litre out from the inlet pipe to the first carburetter. The engine would run for a while with the choke out and the accelerator pressed, but it would not keep going. After another night s settling I syphoned another five litres from the bottom of the tank (leaving about 13 litres from the top of the mixture). Lack of suitable containers prevented me from removing any more. I then added 15 litres of fresh petrol and pumped out another litre from the carburetter inlet pipe. I also removed the float chambers and cleaned them out. Then I removed the pistons and wiped the needles, checking that, when replaced, the raised pistons fell as they should. But still the engine only runs with the choke out and kept at high revs.

By my reckoning, even if the petrol/diesel was perfectly mixed I would now have about 16% diesel in the tank. Removing fuel from the bottom of a settled tank should reduce this to less than 10%. With this I would expect the engine to run, albeit hesitantly.

I would welcome your advice.

Hi David, Rest assured - you are not alone! I did the same with my TB a couple of years ago on the way back from a TTT Tour. I blamed BP whose holsters were quite misleading. Thought I d dropped a valve or similar and didn t realise what I d done until a week later when I looked at the fuel receipt. I did completely drain my tank, lines, pump and carbs. I also removed the head to check for damage as the smoke and rattling was pretty bad. AA got us home. Fresh fuel and the car started and ran fine.  I made several trips to the local recycling centre who took the fuel. I bought a cheap syphon pump from Halfords to save risk of misfueling myself! Hope this helps if only to let you know you are not alone.  Regards  Jeff N Cambridgeshire  MG TB80 the 80th anniversary Event for MG TB Owners 1939-2019 Sent from my iPhone

Attachments :You are not alone  !Been there, seen it, Done it !BP were somewhat misleading, other firms had black holsters for dieseland I thought that was universal, so ended up putting petrol from a blackholster into a diesel car.Amazing how many oyhers have done the same when in a hurry.Dave WhiteUK

Hi David, Easy mistake to make .. I came very close to doing the same thing in my previous TC but 'snapped' out of it after putting in a no more than a cupful at most. It was the odour that pulled me up.    As oil floats on water, does it not go that diesel floats on petrol?  I'm no chemist and don't know the characteristics or specific densities of the two fuels but I'm sure someone on the 'list' will put me right.       Possibly the worst thing you did was leave it overnight. Hope you get your XPAG running as it should soon.   TweedTC 0632 Cambridge UK               From: "jeffrey townsend jeff.townsend@hotmail.co.uk [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: "dr.david.james@gmail.com" dr.david.james@gmail.com> Cc: "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Friday, 18 January 2019, 17:28 Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Diesel in Petrol!   Hi David, Rest assured - you are not alone! Re: Diesel in Petrol!

Something to keep in mind ..check your dipstick as your oil level will go up due to washing down the cylinder walls with unburnt diesel. You probably will have to change your oil, depending on how much diesel passed . Smell your dipstick and if it smells like diesel .change oil. I had this happen to me while I was at a cheap fuel stop on the trans Canada highway. In those days diesel was cheaper than gas so an unscrupulous garage turnpike owner put gas mixed with diesel in my car to save himself a few bucks. I only discovered it when I smelled under the hood diesel fumes.Ron BeaudoinTC 9448

Regards Jeff N Cambridgeshire MG TB80 the 80th anniversary Event for MG TB Owners 1939-2019 Sent from my iPhone On 18 Jan 2019, at 16:59, dr.david.james@gmail.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:  By asking this question I m admitting to an act of gross stupidity. I just made it.On the basis that diesel is denser than petrol I let the tank settle over night and then syphoned about 15 litres from the bottom of the tank.. I then pumped another litre out from the inlet pipe to the first carburetter. The engine would run for a while with the choke out and the accelerator pressed, but it would not keep going.. But still the engine only runs with the choke out and kept at high revs.By my reckoning, even if the petrol/diesel was perfectly mixed I would now have about 16% diesel in the tank. Removing fuel from the bottom of a settled tank should reduce this to less than 10%. With this I would expect the engine to run, albeit hesitantly.I would welcome your advice.
