Craig, Done it a number of times.  If they are stuck as bad as it sounds you ll need to soak in penetrating fluid (best is a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid ATF), then use a drift to drive it far enough out that you can grip it with visegrips and pull/twist it out. I tried the ATF/acetone mix and then use Plus Gas which worked.

In addition to penetrant to loosen use a drill to extract.

 

Tap rod out far enough to put the end in the drill chuck and spin fast. As it is spinning you will be able to pull it out.

Doug,  Exactly right, but suggest use a slower drill speed, and , even better, beforehand, lots of penetrating oil and open and closing the bonnet to loosen everything up.   Then, with the panels on a large table,  a small drift pin to move it about one inch while flexing the panels slightly, then the drill routine.  It will come out, slow but sure.....save the rod, the size, being of British
