MG TA TB Toolbox and lid

Post by Mike Inglehearn » Sat Nov 03, 2018 5:55 am

Hi All
I have a few questions regarding to toolbox on the TA & TB. I understand the TA/TB toolbox lid was originally made from 9 ply 1/2" plywood but can anyone tell me if the hinges are rebated into the lid and center piece or just sat on top?
I also believe the TA & TB tool box was also lined in felt, on the sides is the felt above and below the lip for the tool trays, or just below the lip, also is the felt only on the sides or is it also on the bottom?
Finally do the neoprene tool trays just sit on the lip or is there anything else under them to support them?
Regards
Mike

Attachments : Hi Mike, I have attached a couple of photos. I think my lids are original. The hinges are not recessed. My lids are 9 ply as you say. My toolbox has never been lined so I m not sure how they left the factory. My tool trays sit on 2 pieces of 3 ply size 269 x 227x 3mm. I installed these but read somewhere that they were used originally. Without them the trays would sag.  Regards Jeff TB OWNERS JOIN US AT TB80 (1939 - 2019) NEXT MAY Sent from my iPhone On 3 Nov 2018, at 12:55, Mike Inglehearn mingle54@btinternet.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

Attachments :I believe TA 1326 is original with respect to the tool box.Mine is similar to Jeff's. I have re-molded trays, aftermarket, and had to put 1/4" plywood under them to support them. !/4" is common in the US. Not sure it would pass at a concourse, but the TA is driven, not concourse. Hi In case I missed replying to some of you who replied regarding the toolbox & lid, thank you all for the replies, to summariseThe hinges are not rebated (just the nuts of the screws). The toolbox lid was lined with thick black felt but not the fixed center section. The toobox if lined in white felt it was below the lip, but most had no signs of ever being lined. The tool trays sit on 3 ply 3mm plywood which may have been glued to the bottom of the tool tray.Thank you againRegardsMike TB80 the 80th anniversary Event for MG TB Owners 1939-2019
