Whatever you choose, someone will tell you it is wrong. Apparently MG was using some paint left over from the war - or something like that - resulting in significant variations in opinion is not color. After a lot of time passed to find the exactly paint- I follow the paint of the interiors see on the British Tanks modelerslight grey with a bit of green & blue - medium  Silk, satin40 086 VOLVO PENTA "AQUAMATIC"  ( used on the saildrive of marine VOLVO PENTA) find ready as spare on spray bottle in ITALY NOTE : XPAG ENGINE was from WOLSLEY plant,  that used one other kind of paintthe ROYAL MARINE battle ships paintmore DARK  GREY[b] matt[/b]find on old FIAT lorry catalog as 026  NOT GLOSSY, IF I remember well

When I restored TC2911 I found that the firewall had been painted as many times and colors as the body.  However; the firewall had never been separated from the body given the very rusty condition   of the lower bolts.  Therefore when   I unbolted the firewall from the front body timbers exposing the back side of the flange that goes all the way around it, I found a light gray, low gloss paint.  Sort of like a typical light gray primer, but with a bit of gloss, I saw no tint of green or blue.  However this is not to say that different paints were used based upon what was The words Can and Worms spring to mind! We have been through this [i]ad nauseam[/i] (excuse my Latin...) FWIW for TC0978 I got a good match from unexposed paint under the little triangular cable box, and it was Lada Derwent Grey (Ladas are now extinct). The problem with looking at "original, never restored" cars is that the heat and oil fumes have turned the original paint, whether green, grey or greenish-grey, more yellow. And as many people have pointed out, the colour changed all the time depending on what Abingdon could get hold of. For the first year of TC production, only black was available for similar reasons. oc[b]T[/b]agonally RogerTC0978, July 1946, one of the very first ones NOT to be black.

I wouldn't be surprised if making any part of the car "the original color" would depend upon duplicating not only the exact pigment complement, but also duplicating the same pigment vehicles, thinners, guns, spraying technique, and atmospheric conditions present at the time they were sprayed when new.  My guess is that while maybe the Ferrari/Porsche/Bugatti/Duesenberg crowds might go to those extremes, it's very unlikely anybody in the MG world (excepting maybe Tom Metcalf) would. Of course we now live in a post-nuclear, postindustrial atmosphere which might influence color reflectance/transmission. And, individuals' cognitive/perceptual changes relating to the western world's epidemic of metabolic syndrome/obesity, as well as the aging of the population interested in MGs, all probably conspire to mean perceptions of any particular spectrographic definition of color aren't exactly what they were to 25-30 year olds with BMIs of 20 in 1949.  During its restoration in the 90s, exu7617 was sprayed in Deltron (acrylic urethane) using a paint formulated to match an area of original factory color found inside the spare wheel carrier i.e. protected from sunlight.  Unlike the original lacquer which probably yellowed (and might explain why Sequoia Cream cars usually look yellowish), this new stuff is probably exactly the same color as it was 20 years ago when fresh (I'm guessing Deltron will withstand the nuclear holocaust without much color change).  But it's not on a new car anymore.  So even though I went to the effort of spraying it "as close to factory" as possible when building a "new TC", now I'm no longer driving an "authentically colored" car because the color isn't what a 20 year old Sequoia Cream TC would have been.  There are no skinny 25 year olds from a relatively nonpolluted, non-heated, noncrowded, non-radiated world who were there when 6160 left Abingdon in 1948 who can tell me whether or not its current green is "correct" or not.  Depending on which black/white film and filter I use, it looks like exactly the same color as historic pictures of green TCs.  So it must be correct........ I am quite sure the paint on the inside of the flange on my TC was original and undisturbed, but this is not to say that some different hues may have been mixed or used during the time the light gray firewalls were in evidence.  If I were painting a firewall I would just use light gray or the body color if it were a later car of the proper serial number for body color. As far as the engine color, I really have not a clue as my engine had no original paint left.  I mixed up some paint that compared in color to what I saw used by an experienced TC restorer in the Steve,

I found the light grey paint on my firewall in the same place between the mounting bracket the base of the firewall with a rubber strip sandwiched between them. Even with the bolts out I had to pry the pieces apart revealing paint that had never been exposed to heat, oil or even air since being assembled, so the area had been sealed off from all of the elements that can alter paint colour.
