Whenst last I drove to a show I managed to pack my gear in the boot and a bag between the spare tire and the vertical supports of the rack. Now, as Gene will attest, that was some time ago. (Going to shows that is)!15 years back! Has it been that long???? Wow..

Tweed & Josh,
Best I can do at this point is a second pic on a customer's car and an exploded line drawing of the components.
I may have an extra set of the brackets and some of the fixtures stored about.
And i agree that a hamper on a high rack is the "bees knees" just hard to see around.

I'm with Gene in that I quite like the over-all appearence of a T ABC with the high mounted rack ... it may not be the most practical of designs but a wicker hamper strapped to it on a summer's day it does rather suit the car .. in my eyes anyway.

I used to have one of the "High" luggage racks on my TC but did not like the way it blocked vision to the rear when loaded.
Phil Marino, in Southern California, had designed and built a luggage rack that was behind the spare and out of the rear view view and the wind. It's down side was the space required to store it when not in use. I copied that concept but make the rack in 2 major pieces which stored on the wall when not in use being only 4" deep. The mounting brackets remain on the car and are unobtrusive. It was made of 3/4" steel tube and chromed and made "a nice piece of kit". I test loaded it to 150+ pounds and got worried that if it were that loaded the steering would be affected if not in good repair.
The first batch was 3 units plus the proof or concept prototype. That is when I found out very few people in the US actually tour in their TC so there was little or no market for it. I ended up selling the prototype and 2 of the units. The third unit is on my TC.
I still have much of the tooling, drawings and some of the bits if anyone wants to put it to use.

When my rack is not in use it swings up from the bottom and sits hard up against the spare so it has minimal to no impact on the line of the TC. When traveling solo all I take is a hold all which sits nicely behind the seats. Travelling with the Leader of the Opposition is a little different. By using the case on the rack allows each of us to take enough luggage with some spare space behind the seats for jackets, camera box (am also a frustrated wannabe photographer) etc

Personally, I think the luggage racks spoils the lines of the car. I get a large sports bag, wrap everything inside in plastic bags so as to keep the stuff inside dry and then fix the bag to the spare wheel with bungee cords. Using the spokes to affix the hooks and two bungees top to bottom through the handles and two side to side, again through the handles keeps it secure. Easy to take off and does not restrict rearwards vision. Norman Verona aka "Email Norman" 11 Cherry close, Royston, S71 4LZ Mob: 0741 9905 741 Web:
