XPAG piston Query

Post by ian thomson » Wed Aug 22, 2018 10:49 am

I wonder if any of you engine building gurus out there can help me. I am checking over an XPAG engine and am trying to decide whether I need new pistons or can get away with just a set of rings. The gaps on the top two compression rings average 6-10thou. whereas I believe they should be 2-3 thou. They also have a prominent wear step of 6-10 thou. with a total ring thickness of 80-85 thou.  I would expect some wear and am wondering how much of it will be on the rings themselves and how much the piston grooves will have widened.  After all aluminium is somewhat softer than cast iron!  Basically if I chance buying rings am I likely to get ones which brings the whole thing into spec. or is it safer to buy new pistons?

Ian you need new pistons. Rings are .0885" ring gap in ring land for a new piston is .001"-.002" . This being said, I have a 1972 Ford WSM that states for all engines " service or wear limit is .006" " The rings do not wear much at all, the piston ring lands do wear. I would not build an engine with the ring land gap of .004" or larger.Were the compression rings broken? If the bore is ok with mo taper or ovaltiy  de glaze the bore with a ball type hone.  Hope this helps Len Fanelli Abingdon Performance Ltd. -----Original Message----- From: 'Ian Thomson' i.thomson@talk21.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wed, Aug 22, 2018 1:50 pm Subject: [mg-tabc] XPAG piston Query #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 #ygrps-yiv-1073049382AOLMsgPart_2_8a4f56fd-3edf-4029-b31b-a262d72e35ef td{color:black;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_ygrp-photo-title{clear:both;font-size:smaller;height:15px;overflow:hidden;text-align:center;width:75px;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_ygrp-photo{background-position:center;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-color:white;border:1px solid black;height:62px;width:62px;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_photo-title a, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_photo-title a:active, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_photo-title a:hover, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_photo-title a:visited {text-decoration:none;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-table div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-row {clear:both;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-table div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-row div {float:left;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody p {clear:both;padding:15px 0 3px 0;overflow:hidden;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_ygrp-file {width:30px;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-table div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-row div div a {text-decoration:none;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-table div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_attach-row div div span {font-weight:normal;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_ygrp-file-title {font-weight:bold;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 #ygrps-yiv-1073049382AOLMsgPart_2_8a4f56fd-3edf-4029-b31b-a262d72e35ef td{color:black;} _filtered #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 {font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody p.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_MsoNormal, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody li.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_MsoNormal, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_MsoNormal {margin:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri", "sans-serif";}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody a:link, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody span.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_MsoHyperlink {color:blue;text-decoration:underline;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody a:visited, #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody span.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:purple;text-decoration:underline;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody span.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_EmailStyle17 {font-family:"Calibri", "sans-serif";color:windowtext;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_MsoChpDefault {font-family:"Calibri", "sans-serif";} _filtered #ygrps-yiv-1073049382 {margin:72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt;}#ygrps-yiv-1073049382 .ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolReplacedBody div.ygrps-yiv-1073049382aolmail_WordSection1 {} I wonder if any of you engine building gurus out there can help me.
