Can't get grommet to fit

Post by Neil Nelson » Fri Jul 20, 2018 3:47 pm

Okay, I give up. How do you get the large grommet that separates the two halves of the air manifold to fit?  On my car the two halves are right snug together when bolted up to the carbs and there is not way I can fit the grommet between them and still fasten the manifold to the carbs.  I have pushed, pulled, grunted and griped but the thickness of the grommet will not allow it to go between the halves and have the bolts come anywhere near matching the holes in the carbs.  So, is it permissible to cut the grommet in half and then secure it with the clamp?  Seems to me to be the only solution.  Trying to thin down the grommet on the inside while keeping it cut even looks to be pretty difficult.  This is a replacement air manifold not from this car but still OEM part and new grommet.  Any ideas out there?

Neil, The grommet fits on my car. If it helps you to locate your problem here are some dimensions: The centres of the two holes (the rear hole on the front carb flange to the front hole on the rear carb flange, where the air cleaner manifold fits) on my car is 124mm (4.9in). When the two parts of the air cleaner manifold are fitted they leave a 6mm (0.23in) gap between the air cleaner manifold halves. This is not sufficient to fit the grommet with the two halves bolted to the carbs but is sufficient to accommodate the grommet if it is introduced during assembly of the two halves. The technique I used was to fit one screw loosely into each manifold half, then rotate both halves upwards, fit the grommet and then rotate the two halves downwards to fit the remaining two screws. If the grommet is old it may be hard and less flexible in which case this might be part of your problem. If you are within a millimetre or two of the 6mm gap you could consider opening up the holes in the carb flanges a tad to gain a bit there. I hope this helps you to locate the problem. Regards Peter Cole.

I've come across this once or twice and have solved it by using a length of triangular section rubber or neoprene, cutting it to size and joining the ends with a suitable adhesive for the material. Had no subsequent problems.
