hi Guys - a question for you engine-builder guys: what is the difference in diameter between 7 1/4" and 8" flywheels? Bob G's drwg of lightening does not show the diameters. The reason is that a TC with a perfectly good TD engine does not look "right" with a small TD starter motor. If his

Roger, I may be wrong bit I think the flywheels are the same diameter, it's the clutch that's bigger.

Guys, If you really need one there is one that just expired on ebay.  It did not sell so it must have been too high.  I don't need it, so make an offer.  Not much good if you are outside the US due to shipping costs..

It's the ring gear that is different. The centre line of the TC and TD/TF is the same, just that later it has more teeth on the ring and starter. The TC and early TD flywheels are the same and use the 7-1/4" clutch. Either TC 93 tooth or TD 120 tooth ring gears of 10-3/8" inside diameter can be installed on these flywheels. So you can decided which starter you want to use with the corresponding ring gear as both starters bolt onto the XPAG/XPEG blocks. However, you can't mix starters and ring gears. Use a TC starter with the 93 tooth TC ring gear. TD starter with a 120 tooth ring gear. Late TD/TF flywheels are different, heavier, and take a different ring gear which is 10-3/4" ID but also 120 tooth and uses the same TD starter . The 8" clutch fits only the large 8" flywheel and clutch. My "Bob Grunau Drawing " is actually an MG Factory drawing and is for the early 7-1/4" flywheel/clutch and so can be used for the TC or early TD. It can form the basis for lightening the 8" flywheel. No Norman, the flywheels are different as are the clutches. My drawing is for an early TD/TC 7-1/4 flywheel/clutch.

Bob, ok, I wasn't sure. Us the bell housing on the 8 inch clutch wider than the TC?

The TB/TC bell housings are the same with 5/8 diameter clutch operating shafts.

The early TD bell housing is the same as TC with 5/8 clutch shaft except the spigot for the ball bearing is smaller so will not work without modification.

The Morris 10 bell housing is the same as early TD with 5/8 clutch shaft..

The late TD/TF bell housings are the same and differ from the early TD by the clutch shaft is diameter and moved back slightly to accommodate the larger 8 clutch.

Bolt patterns for all the above bell housings are the same front to engine and back to gearbox.

I ve got some TA TB VA WA tools on ebay!

But question: will the late TD bell housing with the shaft, work with a 7-1/4 flywheel? Jan/Fairfield, Ohio

-Yes, but the clutch shaft is further back so you may want to try a bigger off-set throw-out bearing from an MG Midget 1500 to make proper contact with the 7--1/4 clutch pressure plate..
