I have been considering rebuilding my existing pump and a spare. It is now being suggested that I put an electric one in line under the car out of sight

Bruce, If the body of you existing pump is good then I would advice rebuilding it. The SU electric pump is very reliable if maintained. The points need cleaning and adjusting every couple of years, just as the points in a distributor do. It s lack of this maintenance that cause failure. My pump body was so corroded it fell apart (broke) when I tried to strip it down. I had to get a modern electronic replica which failed in 3 months. It s replacement has been OK for 21 months but I will always have fears about it. I now run a solid state version and carry the old one as a spare, but a bit surprised to hear you had a problem with your electronic one Norm. Was it just a rogue one or are there other instances of them failing? I thought they were supposed to bullet proof. Tweed. In the past I bought two electronic fuel pumps (not SU), one fitted to a midget failed after a sort while the other was ok. On the TB I had trouble with the pump last year and replaced the points which after a bit of fiddling to get set up correctly, have so far worked ok. I have however bought a Burlen / SU electronic one from the Octagon club, I haven't tried it yet and at the moment carry it as a spare though at some point I may swap them round.RegardsMike From: "Norman Verona norman@frenchblat.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> Cc: 'Bruce Doran Veevers' ; mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, 18 June 2018, 10:02 Subject: Re: RE: [mg-tabc] Electrical Fuel Pump I believe, from NTG, that they are prone to failure but once you get a good one it should be ok. We used the old SU pump for over 30 years without a problem if they are serviced. I was trained by "real" mechanics who would service the SU pump on the major 12,000 mile service. The points we're cleaned using a small oil stone and then adjusted.
