I use #90 or #140 EP gear oil, same STEERING BIX, GARBOX AND DIFFERENTIAL.

Don’t forget a few drops of engine oil in the generator rear lubricator .

I am in the midst of cleaning and refurbishing my tac reduction box.  Some idiot (me) loaded it with chassis grease and it (thankfully) managed to work itself off the generator; else I suspect the would be nice shiny nubs where the gear teeth once meshed.

 

My stupidity aside, does anyone have a recommendation for the “gear oil” the Book notes?  And any other thoughts?

The Penright stuff is a viscous oil that seems light enough for the reduction gears, yet thick enough not to leak. I have been using it in my steering box with no problems .and no leaks!

 

I understand you attended a shop day at Abingdon Spares last week. My ace mechanic, Jim Vibert, was there and said hello to you. He appreciated the session on SU dampers.

I put a NOS unit into my TC several years ago and decided to try 600W gear oil as used in Model T rear ends. It's really more like a 250W, maybe 320W by modern standards. It hasn't leaked and the unit is still in perfect running order.
