TC7142 Further Work

Hi Andrea,

You raised an interesting question in response to my update regarding the fitting of the bonnet to TC7142, namely 'what still needs to be done?'

The delay in responding is because I have been giving this some thought.

Clearly I will need to do a thorough set of road tests, but before that stage I will have to:

Test the dynamo - this is on the car but I have run the engine and tested the electrics on the battery alone.

Test the voltage regulator - check that it cuts off etc. when the dynamo is operational

Rear axle - Static tested only by turning the prop shaft by hand and seeing the rear wheels turn and engaging the gearbox and turning over the engine with the starting handle to operate the end-to-end transmission from the engine to the rear wheels

Gearbox - visual checked only and basic operation tested as above. Not yet tested by running through the gears

Steering tracking set up

Fuel flow from tank to engine - tested only by hand filling the float chambers

Brakes - static tested only

There may be more to do - any further suggestions from the group welcomed.

My basic plan is to complete these tasked over the summer

Regards

Nick

Nick, there s a weekends work there. Come on, get it finished.

I m not sure what you ve done so far so it s difficult to comment.

However I d check all the lights and horn etc work, the gauges all work and put a voltmeter on the battery and run the engine. You should see the voltage rise as you increase revs and then stop as the cut out comes in. I have set mine to 14.5 volts.

Check all oil levels.

Remove (or slacken ) the fuel pipe to the back carb and switch on. If fuel comes out and the pump is ticking you have feed from the tank.

The longest job on your list is to set the track. If you have 4 axle stands and two lengths of wood just wider than the car place a stand at each corner, the wood across the front and rear stands and then tie thin twine from front to rear between the wood. This should be as close to the centre of the wheels you can get. You now have a box around the car and with a steel rule can measure the distance between the front of the front wheel and the rear of the front wheel. I measure against the centre of the tyre so as to eliminate any distortion in the rim. You can now adjust the drag link to get your favoured toe in. The book says 5/16 (I think) but following Steve Steirman s advice I set mine to . Remember to set each side to half your desired measurement.

If you start at 0800 you ll be done by 1500 and can drive it on a quiet road to check the brakes.

Nick,  You are one patient guy!    Norman is being generous with a weekend...2 hours should do it.   .I would put it all together, push it out of the garage, check oil, water, and brake fluid levels, also petrol, and fire it up.  Then drive it.   If the gearbox does not work, you will find out very quickly.    Other items may take more time to become evident, such as the rear end axle unit being backwards, found that out on TC0780 soon after purchasing it, the hard way.    When I was test drive cruising on the freeway at 65, felt a thump, and then noticed my left rear wire wheel keeping pace with me on the road.  Of course I leaned over to the right, slowed and stopped on 3 wheels, and considered my options.   Being an impromptu test drive, I had no tools with me.   Fortunately a State Trooper, built like a brick, witnessed the whole thing, retrieved the Knockoff and wheel, and , since I had no jack, he lifted the rear of the TC while I put the wheel back on.   I slowly crept home, humbled, and reversed the rear end........ Hi Nick
As suggested by Norman (my TC GURU)   take the static control on your car -
don't wait to finish aesthetic works- they can be finished later
Then test the car on the road , normally my first test is on a flat large road - (few trafficked)
nearest my house - at the ends it have two round-abound so it easy to continue to
drive and stay nearest to my garage - if troubles happen is easy to tow the car
to home with my Toyota and a friend-
During my TC test i have 4 rescues- all due at my oldest fuel tank dirty full-solved with a
strong clean and epoxy covering-and a new filtered turn cock (Norton motorcycle)
VERY IMPORTANT Advice (essential for security and long trips)
the REAR AXLE  ,
must be modified with the  modern  kit to avoid the flow of the oil to the rear brakes
Waiting be noticed about your first trip-happy drive!
