Painting is , as mentioned, mostly prep,, but done in a particular manner if one wants show quality paint jobs. This short video explains how I do my painting, note that the waiting between sanding etc to let the paint 'adjust' or 'settle' is also important, as is the sanding......it would be nice to have a heated paint booth, but just having a booth is a plus.....but not required,....did TC0780 in the driveway, single stage urethane, using 'Prevails'.....so you can mix your own paint......available from any of the 'box' stores etc.

As you point out there is a high static:noise ratio re prior personal experiences with paints. Not sure if this is a suitable frame of reference, i.e. It has been my experience that failures, be they paint or whatever, are result of lack of proper preparation procedures, indeed following Mfgrs. instructions.
The right product for the right job a generation ago might not be the best solution today. Solutions evolve as problems emerge & need to be resolved. Past MAY not be prelude! Luddites beware.
