It stopped suddenly when I was driving. _________________________________________________________________ Meld je aan bij de grootste e-mailservice ter wereld met MSN Hotmail: http://www.hotmail.com/nl

Sudden stop sounds like the cable broke. Internal problems with the speedo usually give some warning, with erratic behaviour. ( But not always, I may add). Unscrew it at the speedo, Jack the rear-end up, and run the car in gear, watching the exposed square cable-end. If it's not turning, you may need to insert a new cable, (or a new drive-gear in the tranny, though that's pretty unlikely) If it IS spinning, it's going to be the speedometer itself. That's the quickest way I know. You could check without jacking the car up, also....by just unhooking the cable as described above, and driving the car a short distance while looking at the cable to see if it's turning. Best of luck, Sam

Harry It is either the cable, or gear, or speed-o. Like said disconnect the cable, drive the car and see if the inner part is turning, try to stop it with your finger, just to make sure it is not broken, if it turns when driving, must be speed-o, most of the time it is Cheers Dean -----Original Message----- From: Harry Siegers [mailto:harrysiegers@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2002 12:47 PM To: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com Subject: [mg-tabc] speedmeter The speedmeter of my TC does not work anymore.Does anyone know what could be wrong and how I can control it ?? Easier than that is to unscrew the cable housing from the back of the speedo and pull on the cable end... A broken cable will usually come right out, unless the keeper was left off the bottom end........ or try a hand drill clamped on the end and then turn the handle to see if there is little or no resistance.. In the case of TC 5146 the speedo was always erratic as the needle operated in jerks. It was "fixed" back in the 70s and the car sat for 20 years or so, now that the car is back on the road the instrument does not register speed but it does count the miles. Maybe next winter it will come out for "cleaning". Mark Andrew. Donald Wilkinson wrote:

Harry I had 3 ocassions when my speedo suddenly stopped every time it was due to a cable break.Replacement cables only lasted a few months. Eventualy I had a new inner made by Speedy Cables, on examination it was a much more substantial inner than the replacements from the usual factors! It has been working OK for the last 18 months. Harry, Paul, Please be aware, that you have to mount the speedo cable in the orientation. The inner part of the cable is a wire, wrapped by other wires. If you turn this inner part in the wrong direction you tend to unwrap those wires. In that case the speedo cable doesn't last very long. RE: [mg-tabc] speedmeterThanks Peter Agree! But if the complete cable is purchased, (unless the supplier has assembled the inner incorrectly.) The cable can only run one way? Paul TC3348

Paul, This year I replaced the tacho cable and both ends are equal. So you can install it in both directions. But only one direction is OK! Perhaps both ends of the speedo cable are different. I don't know.
