TD help

Hi I'm trying to get the TD ready for GOF Central. The problem is a complete lack of power. Here is what I have checked. Idle 800 rpm; max rpm 3000 wide open; hesitates when opening the throttle; carb needles ES; carb jets set at 6 flats down; choke disconnected jets are up; carbs sync at idle with unisyn; plugs N5; new points set at .016: new condenser; new coil; timing set at TDC (confirmed by timing mark and valves 7 & 8 rocking); distributer advance weights clean and free to move; plug wires new; spark at all plugs at idle; will idle on three cylinders; can not find any vacuum leak What am I missing? Check that the throttle linkage is opening BOTH throttle shafts. Sometimes a lock bolt will loosen and only butterfly opens, while the other carburetor remains at idle. Good luck, Bruce Woodson [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

While this probably is not the main source of your lack of power on the TD, you should be able to set the timing up to about 5 degrees BTDC with modern regular grade fuels and thus gain some power. The TDC spec in the book was fine for the fuel available in the 50's. I haven't tried it on my TC yet but am told that you can go to 6 or 8 degrees advanced (depending on your compression) by using high octane to gain even more power. Dennis Try hanging an extra distributor capacitor from the screw terminal on the side of the distributor to ground, easy thing to try. How about vacuum, do you have a vacuum gauge? If you pull the carb piston/needle, and turn the switch on, can you see fuel in the jet of "both Carbs"? Pull the choke out a notch at a time. IF it cures the problem, you're too lean. Are the pistons in the suction chambers sticking? Check the delivery rate of the pump. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and pump into a container while timing. You should get one Imperial pint per minute. (Page B.6 of the TD shop manual.) Blake

Some people even go to 10 deg. I stick at about 7-8 deg. IT -------------

Just a few points Dennis to try and get a bit closer to your problem. 1. Was it OK before a lay up or has this just come on following normal running? 2. Have you done a compression check? 3. Have you checked the tappet/rocker clearances? 4. Check the timing with a strobe light - it tells you more about the actual timing point rather than where you think it is. You could usefully advance the timing a bit, say to 5 deg. BTDC. 5. You have changed a lot of things. It is not unknown for a faulty unit to be fitted in place of a good one - and now you have two faults. Can you independently check the parts you have fitted? Don't assume anything, especially that new parts are OK. Ian T. ------------------
