Dear Badger and all
Believe it was Captain James Cook who introduced the use of limes to
supplement sailors' diets to prevent scurvy.

PS "Poms" is a less used term these days in this part of the Antipodes
and, if reference is made to imports from Mother England they're more
commonly referred to as Pommies. NZ was never a penal colony for the
British and so never suffered as a result of the forced export of England's
criminal element like Australia and the Aussies did.

Actually, the use of citrus fruits to combat scurvy dates to 1740. Cook was
a bright guy, but didn't find this problems' solution. The solution was
found by a RN surgeon, who treated men with scurvy by giving one group meat,
another treated with vinegar (yuck), and the last with fresh (well, not that
fresh..) fruit. We know who recovered.
"Antiscorbics" were looked for for years, some types of grass were even
used.
