Here are some photos of early TCs some have chassis numbers, some the date of first registration or their current registration number. By early I mean cars below chassis #2500 or so (April 47). They all have been restored but most owners seem to agree with Mike Sherrill that early cars had gray and not gray/green (aka Khaki) bulkheads. The engines were a different color than the bulkhead, described as a gray/green by Sherrill but it is not the Khaki color that was introduced on both the bulkhead and engine during '47. It is thought that the Kahki colors continued on until the switch was made to Maroon engines and body colored bulkheads. Sherrill's book may have the chassis numbers when these changes occurred. While a lot of early cars have been restored with gray bulkheads there is a lot less agreement on engine color. Most blocks have been hot alkali tanked during rebuilds over the years and that removes all paint even under the brass ID tag. OTOH brackets like those for the oil filter may have been removed and replaced after the block is machined and may still have some traces of original paint left. Water pumps have probably been replaced numerous times so the pump body color is probably no help but the pulley gets transferred from pump to pump so that might also provide clues. The engine bearer plate is also usually removed during a rebuild so that too might have been painted over multiple times but some traces of the original paint might still be there if the paint is removed layer by layer. Of course what you find now after 70 years and many rebuilds is anyone's guess. I was doing this on my car 45 years ago when many TCs had not yet had bare chassis restorations, these days cars like that are a lot rarer. Ultimately you paint it the way you like.

You might also notice that many of these early TCs have cast alloy valve covers. I don't have my service parts list handy but there are starting and ending engine numbers listed for this, as best as I can recall only a few hundred engines built in 46 received these.
