Paint Discoloration

To any car painting experts on the LIST: I have an 8 yr old dark metallic lacquer paint job. It has been "dulled" by fuel escaping from a faulty cork seal at the filling port. When the paint surface is wet with water or detailer etc. the dulling disappears and there is no evident discoloration! Thus, there has not been a tonal/hue change. Only a surface change. I'm told that a current non-solvent clear-coat cannot be applied over the existing solvent-based coating to remove this dulling. Will application of multi-layers of carnauba wax resolve the problem or is there another option (other than new paint)? Art McKenna TC6999Get more from the Web. Hi Art, I would suggest sanding the area with 1500 grit wet until smooth, then buffing with an electric buffer using a glaze or swirl remover such as made by 3M. This will restore the shine. Protect it with a polishing compound that is silicone wax or regular wax free. 10 minutes should do the trick. Cheers, Lee Jacobsen TA2969 Tickford.
