Boiling Oil-like Sound

Dear listers,
I just returned from a 20 mi round trip in ca. 94 deg F weather. The car ran at less than 96 deg C and when parked in the garage only ran up to ca 98 deg C, before cooling. When I turned off the engine there was the title sound coming from the engine, no sound from the radiator. This continued for some time. I have yet to check the crankcase for water, which I suspect. Could I have a blown gasket? There doesn't seem to any oil scum on top of the radiator water, which hasn't dropped to the radiator tubes. If such an event has occurred, are there recommended methods for removing residual water(beyond draining crank case) so rust won't occur until I can get to the fixing the problem. For example adding methanol to the wet oil, much as with gas, then let the oil drain thoroughly? Somebody locally suggested my problem could be gas boiling in the float bowls, but the sound has a deep pitch and the sound of large bubbles as might come from oil? Most likely the sound you heard was water boiling in the engine. I've
heard it before. When you shut the engine off, the water pump is no
longer circulating water to the radiator to be cooled and the coolant
boiled.
When an engine is that hot, you should let it idle until the temp
drops. Open the bonnet on the carb side, too. Usually that helps quite
a bit. If you have water available squirting some into the radiator
from the outside will bring the temp down while the engine is idling.
Don't squirt the water on the engine!
IMO a 20 mile run in 94F shouldn't cause the engine to run up to 98C
that fast. I think you better check the grill slats to make sure they
are open enough. Don't use over 30% antifreeze unless you drive your MG
when the temp is below 0F. Add a "water wetter", it helps. I drove my
TD back from GOF Central in Kansas in 105F. The engine ran 93C when the
car was driven 50 MPH. At 60 MPH, the engine temp would climb to 98C.
However, it took about an hour for it to get up to that temp when
starting out cold.

hi Arthur - also check the timing, if you are too retarded for whatever
petrol (= gasoline) you use this will cause overheating. also the mixture,
you need to run on the rich side to get some cooling from the fuel.

96 deg in 94 ambient sounds like there is nothing wrong with your cooling system. I am no expert but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the XPAG cooling system is rather odd with a tendency to be hotter in the block than the head leading to localised boiling ( your burping sound?). Certainly my Y type does this with no ill effects.

BTW my TC runs at the most 85C on a hot UK run mostly around 75C

Hi,
after radiator rebuild my TC shows the following temperatures:
ambient 20 degC (68 F): water temp 75 degC
ambient 32 degC (90 F): water temp 80 degC
I have seen more than 90 degC only before radiator rebuild.
