Mike,
It constantly amazes me how other members of the group ask questions that
have been buzzing around in my head for ages but never thought to ask! Why
ARE they half-nuts, anyone?

Re: Half nuts for brake drums
Jim - its all a question of room, or lack of it. The original nuts were not
only half-height, they were also 5/16" BSF spanner size, on a 3/8" stud! The
stupid little things usually got rounded off and thrown away years ago, but
I have just seen a car with the original type on the rear, which I replaced,
along with all the other worn out nuts & bolts which the PO (an "engineer")
had re-used when he rebuilt the car.
The new ones I supply are half-height, but 3/8" BSF spanner size. It you
used full nuts, there is a distinct possibility that the wheels will foul on
them and not seat properly on the hub taper of the Rudge-Whitworth system.
cheers
Roger

I believe its because the full size nuts would be too long and would foul
on the spokes

Re: Half nuts for brake drums
I have asked this question a couple of times in the Octagon magazine and got no definitive answer except that other people have, like myself, found them unnecessary. Full size nuts fit, are less likely to cross thread and are easier and cheaper to obtain.

No they don't Charles. Put some putty or plasicine or blu tack on them and bolt the wheel on. There is enough clearance.
