Subject: TC Windshield question
Seems like when trying to fix one problem on my TC several more come
up. Now its the windshield. The glass to frame seal was shot, so I
thought I would just replace ...So the first thing will be to replace
the windshield itself. I can get one cut locally, but I will need a
pattern. Any ideas or suggestions?
Charles...I took my windscreen apart a couple years ago..had the chrome all redone and had new glass cut. If you would like I can trace my old glass on paper and send it out to you if you send me your address. I think mine was original. I had also replaced the brass/steel bits and pieces inside the windscreen frame ..I think I bought that from Moss. I ended up finding that the tapped holes in the new brass strips which fits inside the the chrome frame were off slightly. I cursed and swore and ended up going to my local hardware store and bought a small piece of brass and tapped the holes myself. I also remember that I had ordered a small kit from Moss which supposedly contained all the screws needed to put the complete windscreen together..I was missing lots of them. It was a headache trying to figure out what I was missing.

This is just one of the many "problem" areas that we ought to have nailed by
now, i.e. all the details listed, with drawings, in the Tech Files. I also
have my original glass somewhere up in the barn, since TC0978 runs only with
aeroscreens, that will serve as a double check. As to screws, these are much
better in stainless, which polishes nicely to look like chrome, and has a
much higher shear strength than brass. If anyone is interested, I have the
necessary lengths in SS with either domed or flat countersunk heads.

And speaking of windmills. Has anyone tried to replace the threaded
windscreen wing-nut/pivot studs? These look as though they might be a right
challenge, as they appear to be pinned through the brass windscreen
stanchions.

I've just had a couple made in stainless by my local precision engineer. Not
a problem if you have the right 26 tpi die. The studs I bought commercially
were all wrong. Let me know if I can help.

John,
Thanks very much, I might take you up on that. But what has me bamboozled
is the actual drilling out and replacement of the pins. Strikes me as
though it might be tricky. Or does it just seem that way?
