Dear Group, I'm repeating this query because my server lost a ton of my e-mail, your replies to my previous being amongst it. I got some new front springs and chassis bolts from AS which secure the front of the spring to the casting/tube on the front of the chassis. The bolts are an extremely loose fit in the spring eye. Should they not be a close fit? Thanks. David Lodge

It's not uncommon for the holes to wear from movement. Did you eyeball those for signs of oval or elongating shape? If so, a good welder and a re-drill, or just a good bushing might fix things. OR, could it be there's a bushing missing that should have been there in the first place? If so, and you didn't see any when disassembling, it's possible orig bushings could have worn, broken and dropped out sometime in the past. If none of the above applies, I'd search the garage for gremlins. Best regards, Sam Suklis SS

David, I purchased new front springs a few months back for my 1936 TA from Moss UK. The spring eye was more oval than round and too small to fit bushings and use the chassis bolts. I was fortunate in that I had access to the machine shop at the school where Peter Pleitner from the list teaches. I was able to drill out the spring eye to 9/16" and made 1/16" bushings(reamed) to go with the 1/2" chassis bolt. If you try this I recommend you use a carbide drill bit. I burned up several lesser drill bits in the process. Ken Enborg

hi Dave - I'm not sure anybody replied to this one... It seems "they" cannot make them properly anymore, and these eyes come out all sizes. We would be better off asking for over-sized ones and putting a bush in, as per the TA. ocTagonally TCRoger

Yeah, there usta be spring shops everywhere. The last one I know of in the Buffalo NY (USA) area-Ace Spring- which made heavy truck (lorrie, you Brits) springs (cheep!) but would make you any spring you wanted, closed some years back. The place resembled a huge country blacksmith shop- dirt floor, etc. Don TC7993
