Subject: Riley gearbox, again
Many thanks to all those who sent information about using a Riley RM 1 1/2 litre gearbox in place of a TC gearbox. Here is what I have found out:
1. The complete gearbox can be used if the bellhousing, shift extension and rear cover (mount) are replaced and the 1st motion shaft lengthened slightly where it fits into the flywheel. (I'm looking for these parts!)
2. The case and all the mainshaft gears are the same as TC.
3. First, second and third are each lower geared by the same amount which is about 15%. Fourth is straight through the mainshaft on both units so they are the same 1:1.
4. This means that the gear on the 1st motion shaft and the gear on the cluster where it engages is different from the TC . That is, the first motion gear on the Riley will be bigger in diameter (1 or 2 teeth?) and that on the cluster will be correspondingly smaller. This will give a constant (15%) lower gearing on the Riley for the first 3 speeds. ( Heavy car, relatively small engine).
5. If a 4.55 (Morris) differential is used with the Riley gearbox then the first three final ratios will be within 4% of the stock TC but 4th will now have a final ratio of 4.55 instead of 5.125. Is this a good thing?
Regards, Hugh whose "parts" TC is finally almost all collected in one place.

Re: Riley gearbox, again
Hey Hugh/Jenn:
A. Wonder if the Riley/(Morris?) box is as tough as the TC? Sounds like wide
intermediate ratios (bad) together with taller final (good). Betcha you
wouldn't like it, + sounds like a hassle to try it. On balance, gimme the
closer TC intermediates with the 9/41 final (minimum). Quite naturally, with
enough HP to carry it. Need 100 HP minimum.

Re: Riley gearbox, again
Hi Don, the point I was trying to make was that the guts of the Riley
gearbox are identical to the TC's with the exception of a couple more teeth
on the 1st motion shaft and a couple less on the engaging cluster. The
other parts could be used in your TC box. It is not the same as a Morris 10
box where absolutely none of the components are the same as TC's (or
Riley's).

Yeah, but is it as tough as the TC box? I only own one, but have yet to
break it. You mention the "1st motion" i.e. "low" gear being lower (higher
numerically), thus a "creeper" gear. Who would need it? I have no trailer
hitch on my TC, (not even for the Hobie).

Suspected as much! Have you ever heard a TC/RME whatever start up and
drive off? They sound identical. (If you don't believe me check them out
at van Dusen in a couple of weeks!)
