Old Friends

I have one who has just died so I have to unburden myself. My friend was
a RCAF/ RAF Spitfire pilot. He was an ace, flew out of England, Malta
and northwest Europe after D- day. He ended his wartime flying shooting
down an ME 262 with a Spitfire.
The MG connection is this: During the war in England the intelligence
officer in my friend's squadron was Hart Massey whose father was the
Canadian High Commissioner in the UK. Hart had an MG as a student at
Oxford and still had it with the squadron. In September 1939 when Canada
declared War, Vincent Massey, the High Commissioner had to take the
declaration of war to be signed by the King George VI who was in Windsor
at the house where the Queen Mother has just died. The High
Commissioner's Buick broke down so Hart was commandeered in his MG to
take his father to Windsor so the king could sign the declaration. My
friend said that Hart told him that after the document was signed the
king came out and approved of the mode of transportation. Anyway that is
how Canada officially entered WW2 and without a running MG it would not
have happened quite that way. Thought I should record my friend's
recollections before it is too late. Terry

Celebrate his life!
He was Some Guy! - Knocking an Messerschmitt ME262 down with
anything was no mean achievement.
For those not in the know, the ME262 was Germany's remarkable jet
engined fighter at the end of WW2 - It was fast, and rather manoeverable
too though hellishly difficult to learn to fly well !.
