Thanks to all who responded. I am going ti try John Seim's solution as all parts and compounds are readily available. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Fuel light sending unit
I finally got around to refitting my fuel light sending unit last weekend. I used the Yamabond number 5 suggested by Mr. Seim.
No leaks.
Thank you very much.

Re: Fuel light sending unit
Permatex has discontinued their Hylomar labeled product and has replaced it with part number 85420, which does not have the "Hylomar" name on the package, but features the same description: a polyester urethane based product which is fuel proof. (Note that is FUEL proof, not fool proof)
Lee Jacobsen of this list has viewed the data sheet on the new product and believes it may be the same material as the Hylomar.

Re: Fuel light sending unit
Sounds like it’s a good substitute if it isn’t the same thing as Hylomar M, which Permatex sold as Permatex Hylomar Racing Formula. I’ll look for a tube tomorrow, though I really prefer Hylomar AF, the product that Permatex sold prior to the Hylomar M formulation. Hylomar M is acetone-based and Hylomar Universal Blue has a chlorinated solvent. AF is a bit thinner, but has no solvent so it remains the same consistency. I prefer Hylomar Advanced Formula (AF) over the solvent-thinned materials because it’s much easier for me to use. The solvent-based material thickens very quickly and becomes difficult to spread, but if you’re sealing a really sloppy joint it’s probably a better choice than AF. Take a look at the Hylomar website to better understand the formulations:http://www.hylomar.com/ Hylomar itself is available in the US through Amazon, shipped by a company named Silver Seal Products.
