When scanning Ebay for MG stuff, the phrase NOS often appears in the item
description. What does it mean?

David,
This means new old stock...original manufacturers parts that were never
sold as apposed to reproductions.
Cheers,
John

Hi Dave,
I think it means 'Non Operational Scrap' . Actually, it probably means
'New Old Stock'. Parts that were made back when the car was new but stayed
on the shelf for 50-60 years. The most NOS MG parts I have ever seen was
from a gent down the street that bought a new 51 TD, and proceeded to also
order every spare in the parts catalog. Thousands of Lucas boxes, new
driveshaft, trans , engine, fenders, everything but the body tub. It was
sold, along with all the parts, about 15 years ago for $15,000 to a friend of
mine. The parts were used to restore the car, and it was then sold to the
wife of the editor of Crains Automotive News for a hefty amount as a surprise
birthday present. Lucky guy!

New Old Stock, meaning an original part that has never been used.

In the world of high performance cars, the term NOS can also mean: "Nitrous
Oxide System". Most guys hopping up their Mustang GT's aren't too concerned
with buying "New Old Stock" parts...

David,
New old stock; a phrase much beloved of our North American friends. It
means original, unused, sometimes with packaging been kicking around in
someone's barn, shed, garage, filing cabinet for yonks. ( a Britism!)

G'day Badge!
P.211 Ken Purdey's excellent "Book Of Automobiles"
has a wonderful insight to the British mastery of automotive shorthand.
Worth a squizz.
Also... I recommend the 7-odd page preface as 'Required Reading' to anyone
interested in driving something other than the plastic boxes 'They" would
have us believe is 'In Our Best Interests" as transport.
Gotta go... i'ts last light and the TC calls for its evening 50 mile
excercise.
regards
JR.

Nasty, Overpriced Stuff.
Usually almost worthless as it has shrunk or rusted during the 800 years it
was stored in its' original cardboard box in the open.
Just the thing for the coffee table.
Best,
Ray
