Hi TC"ers- Question? While enjoying a couple of "OLD SPECKLED HEN" ale's I noticed that the golden elixir of life was named after an " Unusual, Speckled Vintage MG"! Does anyone of great knowledge in our illustrious group know what model MG, color, etc the lager was named for? Post picture! 'Old Speckly Hen' was the name given to a 1927 fabric-bodied four-door 14/40 Mark IV sedan, of a grained tan colour and sprinkled with gold dust. There weren't many Fabric bodied 14/40's were built. Later it was used as a factory delivery vehicle. It was broken up before the war. I've got a photo somewhere in a book. Blake

Hen Searchers, September and October 1998 issues of SAFETY FAST, the official M.G. Car Club Magazine, carry an original photograph, a sideview, of MG's "factory run-around"of the 1930's called "Old Specked 'un (=one)", a 14/40 with the flecked paintwork all over the body. The articles tell us a story slightly different from the one told by Ian Parsons in the MGCars site. The MGCC magazine says the nickname changed over the years. "In 1979 (not 89), M.G. asked neibouring Morland brewers brew a commemorative ale for the 50th anniversary of their(MG's) Abingdon factory." "The search for a suitable name ended when someone suggested calling it "The Old Speckled Hen." Hence(!) the name, and the amusing illustrations with the gents who cannot say No to a Hen. I forgot... The reason why it was picked up by MGCC magazine was that two Abingdon art students built an 80% model of the OSH using 7000 labels, 1000 bottle tops, beer barrels and pump handles for display at the Goodwood Circuit revival meeting held in fall of 1998. Rick Hara

We're pretty sure you all know MG stands for Morris Garages and that the first MG's were nothing more than souped-up Morrises. This particular car is a MG 14/40http://www.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgoc&p=emg/1428.htm> (mgcars.org), based on the Morris Oxford. It was kept by the MG factory as a demonstrator and running prototype. One of the experiments was sprinkling the grained black fabric body with silver dust to reproduce a mottled effect. This special paintjob earned the car its nickname Owld Speckled 'un. Later, when the MG-factory moved to Abingdon, the car became a factory hack and its name changed to Old Speckled Hen. Over time the car got lost, but the name stayed and when the Abingdon based Morland breweryhttp://www.oldspeckledhen.co.uk/index2.html> wanted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory, they brewed a special beer also called Old Speckled Hen.
