Here is why not to use Non detergent oil

We have had a series of MGBs which were serviced by a recently deceased British car mechanic, he had convinced all his customers that 30 weight non-detergent was the oil of choice, well we have never seen more disgusting internals to an engine and these engines had regular oil changes. I am not attacking your personal choice of oil as I assume that you must change very frequently but in light of the fact that the people on this list seem to want to preserve their cars for the next 1000 years to use non detergent oil in this day and age is in my estimation UN wise. Detergent oil has come a very long way since WW2 and as a boy I had heard all the problems from all the old time mechanics, one of the problems in the States was that the US manufactures had not discovered Full Flow Oil Filters (Brits had them in the 30s), Chevy on the Stove Bolt 6 used into the 50s only had a bypass filter, Pontiac in 1949 had no oil filter, anyway once you had one of these bombers with 50,000 miles (that only turned 2500 rpm on a good day) on it running on non detergent oil for all those previous years and then the guy at the gas station does a change with the new high detergent oils it has the same effect as a high colonic, any wonder why high detergent oils got a bad rap. If you were building an engine today and thought the state of the art in motor oil peaked in 1950 than I suggest you do some research. I personally use Castrol 5-50 full synthetic, it gives me excellent oil pressure the Supercharger is happy with it and I inspected my bearings and lifters a few years ago and they were like the day I installed them. I did do break in on Castrol 20/50 Mineral oil. Joe Curto

Joe: I couldnt agree with you more. But with one caveat! All cam manufacturers agree that a new engine should be broken in on single weight 30 or 40 weight "detergent"mineral oil. This is very important to "set" the cam. The rings made nowadays dont require non-detergent oil for break in. Plus, with detergent oil, you get all the non scuffing agents which protect the engine during this critical period. Also, it is important to use this oil to break in any engine that is going to be run on synthetic oil. Never try putting in synthetic oil in a new engine until it is broken in. Usually about 2000-3000 miles. Skip Kelsey...................................................... At 09:06 AM 3/7/02 -0500, joecurto@aol.com wrote:
