The adventure continues........One of the items on my to-do list is to
re-cover the seats on TC 2850. Now that Moss is having their sale, I am thinking
of getting new covers from them. My question to the group is, how big a task
is the job? I seem to be OK cleaning, painting and replacing mechanical
parts but, in truth, the body tub work currently undertaken seems very difficult
to progress with. I have never re-upholstered anything and I don't want to
buy them only to replace the entire seat eventually. Has anyone attempted,
failed or succeeded in this task? Advice? As ever, thanks, Tom, TC 2850

				Tom,
I did this task over the holidays last year while my
wife was out of town. I found the Moss kits to be of
good quality and by following the instructions things
went together pretty nicely. The key is to work
slowly and not rush the job and making sure the inner
'works' are in decent shape, mine were surprisingly.
It was a nice job to do inside a warm house while the
snow was coming down as I recall.
 cheers,
 Steve Stierman TC 2911

				Tom,

Another approach might be to purchase the seat cover kit from Moss and have a local upholsterer do the actual install. The Moss leather seat kits are pretty good.

				AW: [mg-tabc] seat covers

				Hi Tom,
With the help of your sample tonnau I got a new one stitched in
India for less than 30 $. But I had to fix the Dot lift matching to the pins
on the car. TC 0448 at present got black leather seats. They are in good
shape. Early TC had black paint. So I do not think it had black leather.
Some places the grey colour is showing out on the black leather. Side part
of the seat cover was never stitched out of leather for early TC.
Seat covers are easy to stitch. I am planning to get a set of seat cover in
grey or light green leather stitched from India next year. In 1950's I had
seen often the upholster doing it for in the work shop for my Dad's cars.
The leather is stitched on to a stuff as 2" length wise pocket. Then these
are filled with cotton. May be in colder countries they can use some other
stuff instead of cotton to fill the pockets. Filling the cotton will give
that nice bulged form and it is a bit of work. Then they are cut in to the
size and side part is added to it by stitching. And finally the edges are
stretched and nailed to the wood frame. If you watch them doing the work it
looks very simple. But I never wanted to under estimate those craft men.

If you purchase a Moss upholstry kit then be sure you get the correct one, as there are two models of seat spring frames. See Mike Sherrells book page 56 for more information. Check which spring frame you have. On the earlier frame the springs cover the entire timber frame from top to bottom where as the later spring frame is some 3" shorter at the bottom. There is another reference is in "T Series Restoration Guide" by Malcolm Green showing an early model seat spring frame. Page 118

I purchased a kit through my local supplier and found I could not make it fit my frame and had to rejig my frame to suit the later kit. (The back rest only). Be carefull as this it a fair task, with your fingers ending up like a pin cushion.

Otherwise the upholstring was quite an enjoyable task, Maybe involve your wife as a bonding thing, I did and she was most pleased to be able to say that she help me in the restoration, other than spending nights alone in the house whislt I was tinkering in the "shed".

				Hi tom!

I also got a Moss kit and did it myself..... Came out pretty good! My car
is a driver so it's fine. If you have a trailer
Queen best have someone else do it unless you have done it before. Just take
your time and if it seems you are not able to complete it a shop could
finish it for you. Give it a shot!!!!!

 Cheers,

 Dave 48' TC
