TC headlight rubber seal

I'm assembling my restored TC headlamps (Lucas M140s) with new rubber seals from Abingdon Spares. The seals are flat on one side (the outside?) and with a thin lip and a thick semicircular lip on the other. Can anyone enlighten me on the correct alignment? I thought it would be obvious before I started..... everything seems to big to fit. John Steedman, TC 0301
