Any recommendations on rebuilding transmissions or differentials. Both are noisy on my car. I have some mechanical kill but have never performed either.

I was hoping someone else would tackle this but guess I will jump in and start on the gearbox. Once you get inside and do an inspection you can ask more specific questions. Most obviously check your bearings, thrust washers, shafts and gear faces for wear. Replacing the seal is a given. I recently quieted my trans by fixing the end play on the cluster gear. Shoot for about 4 thou. Watch out for those sliding hubs too. There are spring loaded balls in there and they will fly out. You can search the tabc archives for my "Balls to the Walls" story on that. I would leave those units together unless you suspect problems with them. Is the trans noisy in general or in particular gears? Gives you clues on where to look. Does it pop out of any gears? If so pay close attention to the shifting forks and striking dogs. Most of all look on it as a fun project and part of a fun hobby. Enjoy, David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

Typo, meant skill.
