Terry,
Being only minimally computer-literate, I would love to know how to set my
computer so that it will not receive any files that are larger than a
certain size, hence, preventing the freezing up of my computer when someone
sends a very large e-mail note. Can you help? (I have Windows 95, by the
way.)

large e-mails from the server to un-freeze his computer.)

Bob,
What you are looking for is something which can be called filtering or
intelligent rules. Depending on the Email tool you use (you run Win95 so
probably you use Outlook Express or Outlook).
What you need to look for in your Email tool is a function called "create
filtering" or "create rule" or something of similar wording.
You will get a menu where you can choose;
-when to use this filter or rule
-which messages should be modified by the filter or rule
-what action to perform by the filter or rule
As an example I will use Outlook Express.
What I want is to delete an Email which is sent to the mg-tabc Emaillist
when it is larger than 10 Kb. (You will see it as from mg-tabc, since you
are the receiver)
Start Outlook Express and in the outlook window click the "Message" button
You will see a number of options of which one is "Create Rule from message"
Select this option
A new window will pop-up showing:
1. Select the Condition for your rule. I will select "Where the message size
is more than". You can add the required size (10 Kb)
2. Select the actions for your rule. I will select "Delete it"
3. Rule description. I will select "where the from line contains..." You can
add "mg-tabc" which is always in the from line of the Email header.
Click ok and give the rule a name. I will name it "delete large Emails from
mg-tabc".
We're finished. Every time you connect to the internet and receive Email
your Emailtool will look at all messages using this rule. All messages from
mg-tabc and bigger than 10Kb will be deleted.
It could be that you use another tool, try to find similar functionality as
writen above or use the Help function.
Ofcourse this will also work for creating seperate directories to put your
Email in. What I do is create a rule which moves all Email from mg-tabc to
the mg-tabc directory. You can even create directories within the mg-tabc
directory which contain specific subjects, e.g. brakes, engine, chassis,
etc. You can do this by creating a rule which looks for "engine" in the
subjectline for all Emails from mg-tabc. If the Email has a subjectline like
"who knows a supplier for XPAG engine tuning parts", this Email will be put
into the "engine" directory. And so will all replies to this Email. Easy to
look for at a later time when you need engine information.
hope this helps.

Computer Filtering

All,
As a last addition to my previous Email, a typical Email only containing text would have a size of max 10KB.
A quick look at Emails sent within mg-tabc shows that most of them are between 2 KB and 10 KB, some are larger being 10 out of 500 !!!.
NOTE: Computers work with bits and bytes (yes it can be just as confusing as TC's).
Each character is represented by 8 bits, being 1 byte. The word TC will be 1 bytes.
10 KB as stated above will be 10 x 1024 characters, 10240 letters, figures, comma's, etc. This is equal to 8 x 10240 bits, or 80 Kb (oh well, just forget most of this, textonly with a max of somewhat more than 10 KB is a good strating point.)
DON'T FORGET THAT YOU WILL MISS EACH EMAIL THAT IS 1 CHARACTER LARGER THAN YOUR MAX.
A small part is data which will not be visible within the Email tool, because it is used by the software to make it all work (before it get's to complicated)..

As was mentioned, 10 KB is a good starting place but you could just
as well make it 11, 15, 17 or what ever if you want so you wouldn't
miss slightly larger files.
My other thought on this is when I use the filter (I am on a Mac
using Eudora) all eamail actually gets transfered from the host to my
computer and if it is filtered, it then goes directly to Trash or
what ever folder I designate. Is the 15 minute down load time some
people experience, from messages downloading from the Host? If so,
the filter acts afterward. Once messages are in your computer it is
just as easy to use your eyes as a filter by scanning the KB size
when the message arrives and before opening it.
Glad to have a fast DSL line and a sharp TC,
