TC action

I just want to make sure I have this right. If I change the steering on my TC for one that works, this is wrong! On the other hand, if I change the entire drive train, the bonnet etc. I will have a TC(?) worth $30,000. I guess I just don't understand. Jim Mink

Collector cars sometimes take on a life of their own. The TC in question and
its former owner were unique. There are far too many "perfect" TC's is is
nice to see a nice driver racing down the road. Bob TC4956

Please enlighten me ... are we talking about a rebodied TR4... or a
bastardised TC?

You've got it Jim. The whole fun part of this list is that most of us
are an illogical bunch of buggers!
Nobody mentioned whether this little red wheeled non indigenous
cause of memory lane emotions among our members was fitted
with an alien steering box but surely this would have been the first
"improvement" before fitting a Fergussen tractor engine and prettied
up bonnet/hood/engine cover.

(Datsun steering + Furneaux 1/2 shafts and electronic voltage
regulators in 2 so called bog standard TCs only ever driven by little
old ladies neither of which will fetch $30K)

Bob I have to agree with Jim on this one, while I like a car to be
personalized if I wanted to drive a Triumph than I would buy one, on the
other hand a nice "street rod" is a joy in its own right but it is not a MG
or what ever the base line car was.

YES! This is exactly so!
The whole thing about these cars is, "character", "charm",
"personality". The thing about Japanese cars is that while they perform
perfectly, they are totally lacking in "personality" while T-cars have
lots of faults but are positively dripping with charm and personality.
By making a T car perform more like a modern Japanese car, that is,
steer with perfection, not drip oil, etc. one is actually robbing it of
the very qualities that make it unique and charming - its personality.
While I have only seen the Miles car in pictures, it is not hard to see
that the alterations that were made to it were aimed at giving that
wonderful car a unique personality all its own rather than robbing it of
the qualities that make T cars special. The applying of terms like,
personality and character to an automobile is difficult to explain in
logical terms so lots of well meaning people will "not get it". It's
the sort of concept that one either understands instinctively or he will
never understand. To Viv's comment that this car would have been
"....... fitted with an alien steering box......surely this would have
been the first "improvement" ..........". I have no personal knowledge
of this car but I'll bet the steering box would have been of little or
no concern.
In short, for most of us, T cars tend to appeal to the emotional side
rather than to the rational - as proof, I submit the tremendous
affection with which this one very unoriginal but very charming car is
remembered by so many people but there will always be those, with their
Datson steering boxes and such, who just don't "get it".

I know this subject will never end, but we buy colector cars because we like
them for personal reasons. The 110% original vs. modified battle will never
end. A stone stock 1932 Ford roadster in the best National first prise
condition is worth 25% of a highly modified 1932 Ford roadster that wins the
Oakland National Roadster show. I like the Clydesdales that pull that
Budweiser beer wagon, but you'll never see one in the winners circle at the
