I guess I have to enter this discussion with my half pence worth. When in the Navy , I bought a Black 1949 MG TC(XPAG 6531)) in San Diego in 1951with less than 12000 miles on it. It had creme leather upholstry and a green Rexine dash. Sunlight and dryness had faded and caused fine cracks in the Rexine material. After owning it for a year, I painted it Oldsmobile deep red. The dash instrument bezel was painted black and my keys dangling scratched the paint off. The practical thing to do since I was in the Navy, was to cut up a beautiful piece of luggage I had. It was genuine alligator on the outside, and genuine pigskin on the liner. Strip the Rexine and install dark grey alligator over the plywood base and then glue the light yellow brown pigskin over the dingy black paint. Boy! was it a showpiece and no more scratches or clanging of keys as the pigskin was a cushion. Pure Class! I know, alligator is off limits now, but this was my Dad's bag when he immigrated to USA in 1924. I had a canvas seabag and didn't plan to travel otherwise, so the suitcase suffered.......... Wish I had the suitcase, and OF COURSE! the MG now. I do have a 1947 MGTC and a 1929 MG M Type now........... Well! the 1949 MG TC was 'perfect' of course!!!!!!!! Where is it now????? BOB Zwart P. S. OK MGTCers, Now that you have convinced me that Rexine with a black instrument panel and maplight bases is appropriate for my car, can you please clarify what type of black? Would it be semi-gloss? Thanks. Doug Pulver TC 5850 (from Canada) (the car, not me)

Doug For what it's worth, my maplight bases were gloss black at the back, where they were protected from the weather. Therefore the fronts of the bases would also have been gloss. I think, on that basis, that the centre panel would have been a matching gloss. However, looking at early photographs I haven't been able to draw any firm conclusions. Perhaps like a lot of things on the TC, they came in both finishes, depending on paint availability. Are there any listers who actually remember seeing the panels before they were weathered and who could enlighten us? Mark Jablonski Melbourne Australia

When I aquired TC 8970 it had a beautiful "engine turned" dash. The PO told me that it was on the car when he imported it from the old country and that he was told it was a factory option. In any case, I like it and have kept it. I does make for some interesting conversations "YOU REALIZE that the dash is not original!" etc. Depending upon how nasty the speaker is I either ignore the comment or tell them to bug off.
