Original TC wooden dashes were NEVER solid walnut - they were walnut VENEER
plywood - these were mass-produced inexpensive cars.
The very original TC/5112 that was for sale earlier this year had a
rexine-covered dash with black instrument panel, and Terry's old TC puts the
date even sooner - the crossover point seems to be much earlier than
originally thought.
Craig Seabrook, what do you say?
Cheers,
Pete

Re: EXU Dash
Thought I'd add my 2 cents worth.
Back in 1961 when I purchased my VERY ORIGINAL 1949 MG-TC, EXU-10009, it
had a Rexene covered dash board with a tan instrument panel (pictures to
prove). In fact, back in those old days, I don't recall ever seeing a
walnut one that wasn't home grown. I made a nice teak veneer dash board
for my car about 35 years ago which has now aged and mellowed to the
point where some "expert" will be saying that "Yes, teak dashboards were
original on some 1949 cars" or some such nonsense.

Re: EXU Dash
Hi Group:
Craig and I over the past 25-30 years of restoring TC dashboards and
inst. panels, have come up with these chassis numbers as the approx. change
over points from walnut veneer to rexine and black to tan.
TC 4868 had walnut veneer facia.
TC 4977 had rexine covered facia.
TC 6889 had a black inst. panel.
TC 6909 had a bronze-tan inst. panel.
We feel that somewhere in the vicinity of these numbers is when the
factory started the change-overs.
Fred Kuntz TC 5087 rexine/black
Craig Seabrook TC 0911 walnut/black

I seem to recall that the wiring of the dash was a separate harness . I obtained the complete wiring harness for the TC EXU from Autosparks here in the UK which included the dash harness. The main loom also came complete with the extra wires for the tail / stop lamps which as you will be aware are mounted high on the sides of the petrol tank. Don't forget that the flexible main harness protection tube that goes over the gearbox bell housing must be fitted as the harness is being made up as it cannot be threaded over the completed harness i.e.the harness cannot be threaded through the tube. > As a matter of interest , you may not be aware of an idiosyncrasy with the EXU wiring in that when the stop lights are activated when braking , the front wing mounted side lights also come on !
