A bit off the point perhaps, but I thought the following would amuse most of you. I purchased a Top-Tronic T7001 Multimeter today. Upon reading the instructions, I noted the following: "Great care has been taken in the complication of this instruction manual. However, we cannot guarantee the correctness and completeness of the data, ...." Joe Gates TC8675

Hi All,
let's not get a thread obout foreign translations going but a friend, many years ago bought an electric tester that purported to be "the best tester in testerdom" as well as a portable, magnetic chess set "always handy and a boon when travelling"
BTW I.m most interested in the articles about ignition timing. Where I live, on the South African East Coast the lowest octane rating for leaded fuel is 97. Where does this leave me re timing?

Greetings All, Maybe a silly question but it came up in the course of recent events: On the generator, which is the Field terminal and which is the D - looking from the back of the car. (Assuming wiring from scratch) and what happens if they are connected the wrong way round? Have been looking at some wiring diagrams and pictures but to me does not seem too clear. Dear Malcom, The Dynamo will not work and battery will not charge !!! _______________________________________________ Now I had to explain it to you like I do in the kindergarten. In the Dynamo as we refer to TC, there are two parts. One stationary and the other rotating part. We need two different magnetic fields to generate Voltage/current. So let us start with the filed winding. It is stationary. It is just a coil or copper wire winding. One side of this copper wire is earthed and the other is connected to the battery. In our case the one wire ( F) in our TC is the Field winding is connected to battery. The other end is earthed. So current will flow now from the battery creating a magnetic filed by the stationary winding. I think so far it is very simple. Hope you can follow. It is similar to a bulb connecting to a battery poles. Current will flow from one pole of the battery to other pole of the battery via the bulb. Now the bulb get heated and part of the energy turn into light energy. Now let us go to the rotating part. This is also a copper coil. But connecting a rotating coil direct to battery is difficult. So this is done by the collector and the cole brush. Now here also one end is earthed and the other end is connected to the battery. Now if you rotate the winding it will generate voltage. and feed into the battery. But there are many other control function. You do not want the stationary winding to be connected to the battery permanent killing the battery. So you have this Ignition switch. Then again you do not want the energy from the dynamo when the battery is fully charged. So the Filed winding can be switched off. The is done by the cut out (Voltage) relay. There is also another switch needed to prevent current flowing from the battery to the rotating coil. This is done by the voltage relay. Only when the red light of the dash board is off dynamo is connected to battery. The rotating part got some residual magnetism. The more it rotate, greater the magnetic field. So it is called a dynamo. Now by changing the wires you are ...not...feeding to the battery supply to the wrong terminal " D" to initiate a stationery magnetic filed. So the confusion. The regulator can not work. So those electrical professionals, please do forgive me for this stupid explanation. I just want to help Malcom with my limited knowledge !!!! The expalnation can go loooong if needed. Madhu On Thu, Oct 15, 2009 at 4:33 PM, Malcolm Scanlan malcolmscanlan@hotmail.com
