OK, last summer I had heating problems in the TC. Too much heating. I would
gain heat in the motor the longer I stayed on the open road. It actually did
OK in town, but not great. So, this last winter I decided to fix it.
Heeding the advice of this group in whole, I implemented all the fixes.
1. Radiator re-cored with modern core
2. Water pump rebuilt with 6 blade impeller and modern bearing and seal
3. MGB fan fitted in place of existing flat piece of metal
4. New Thermostat at 165 degrees
By the time I got it all back together summer was here and it was warm. It
did wonderfully. I took it to Napa California for the West coast GOF and the
ambient temp was easily 100 F ++. The TC stayed right on thermostat. Very
nice indeed. Well, now the last week or so we have had a cold spell here in
Oregon. It has been 50 to 55 degrees during the day. (that's wine temp for
you Celsius guys). The problem is the car will not come up to thermostat
temp. It stays twenty degrees below sometimes. This creates some running
problems as you might expect. I believe the thermostat is working because
when the ambient temperature is up, the car stays right on stat. My bypass
is fixed at 1/4" with the modern type thermostat.
Any ideas??

Re: Ambient vs XPAG
Hi Joe, Cooling: I think that the TC is overcooled for such cold climates. If you are not too concerned with originality I suggest that for regular use you remove the fan blades and fit a thermostatically or manually switched electric fan. If you don't wish to do this you could try without fan blades altogether but keep a very careful eye on the temp. if you get stuck in traffic, or experiment with blanking part of the radiator. I have fitted an electric and here in the UK I only need to use it in traffic the hottest weather and only rarely when travelling at a decent speed. Greasy spokes: Remove the grease nipple and blank off. If still a problem try blocking the large central hole in the hub with a suitably sized plastic disc sealed in with silicone sealer. Try using small amounts of a copper-based grease on the splines. These have worked for me. Malcolm TA1250 (with XPAG)

Re: [mg-tabc] Ambient vs XPAG hi Joe - Steve Taylor is right about the fan, your new set-up with MGB fan has over-cooled you engine!
So far nobody has mentioned the cooling effect of petrol - when I last rebuilt TC0978 with TF valves and carbs and Derrington extractor manifold, I thought that the carbs should have "competition" needles (LS1) so I bought some from Burlen services. They look very skinny, obviously give a richer mixture (need choke only for 2 seconds, push in as soon as the engine fires) and even with no fan the the temp. only once got over 95F when in a summer traffic jam.
Of course the petrol consumption was also horrendous, and having run out a few times, this summer I dug out some old std. TC needles (ES) which are much fatter, and re-fitted the fan. The results are quite predictable: much more economical, a bit down on power, and a temp. guage which fluctuates wildly. Slogging up long hills or sitting in traffic, up to 80-90F, but coming down quite quickly to the normal 70F as soon as a nice easy cruising speed builds up.
