Engine number

Rob,
The block on my TC is stamped just below the brass octagonal tag "5925".
I too noticed this when I first rebuilt the engine and in all the years since no
one has ever mentioned this number! I have casually looked for it on a few
TCs but either it is not there or the paint too thick. I can't remember if my
spare engine is marked...I will check it tonight!

Looks like the engine number on Bob Thomas' XPAG is stamped just below where the octagonal brass plate once was. (See the penultimate photo in his

Can anyone tell me the significance of the number on the replacement engine of my 1949 TC. It is XPAG SC No c23498. On a separate brass plate is the following information - Morris Motors Ltd Replacement Engine. Bore size TDS, Crank size R2, Shop No 11274/4
I've often wondered exactly what they meant.

Hi Anne,
My TC 4054 has a similiar engine number - XPAG SC 13909. Apparently it was a
single carburettor (hence the SC) XPAG engine from an MGY type saloon. My
car was first fitted with this engine in 1949 or 1950 (using old
registration records) so perhaps they were used by the factory as
replacements, possibly under a warranty scheme?? Someone else might be able
to help with more information here - my car doesn't have the other plate
that yours does.

I noticed that the engine number on my car is (brass tag) is also stamped on
the block. It appears the the brass tag matches this number. The number
stamped on the block is under the tag, but is visible enough to show that it is
the same number...
My engine is original to my car leaks and all.

slightly elevated ground.

Hi Peter,
I assume the drain tap is at the front of the engine just behind the front
bearer plate.
In any case, I think 15839 SC is an XPAG engine originally in an early MG
Y saloon car with 7 1/4" clutch. Same basic engine as an early TD.

hello Peter - SC stands for Single Carburettor, which would make it a Y-type
engine, BUT XPAG/TD2/15839 (i.e. 8" clutch) was fitted to TD15788 EXLNA, so
either the records are wrong, or this engine somehow found its way back from
N. America!

If SC is Single Carburetor, TC is Twin Carburetor, what can we call three
Carburetors for six cylinders ???
