Hello,
May I make a late contribution to the 'Crane Cam' exchange.
I fitted a Crane 340-0010 (ex Moss UK) to my stage 2 XPAG some 15,000 miles ago and can only say that I am delighted with the engine's behaviour, particularly since I rather belatedly fitted shortened push rods. Crane Market it as suitable for TC/TD/TF.
I do not understand cam technology sufficiently to compare the -0010 and -0002 models in use but I quote below the comparative details of the -0010 so that interested and knowledgeable members can compare with the -0002 specifications already quoted by Skip.
Valve settings: inlet .016, exhaust .018 (hot)
Lift: int.@cam 280, @valve 353; ex.@cam 294, @valve370. Rocker arm ratio 1.26
Cam timing @.016 tappet lift: in. opens 24BTDC and closes 56ABDC with advertised duration of 260
ex. opens 69BBDC and closes 21ATDC with advertised duration of 270
Cam timing @.050 tappet lift: in. opens 6BTDC and closes 36ABDC,max lift 105ATDC, duration 222
ex. opens 51BTDC and closes 1ATDC,max lift 115BTDC, duration 232
Recommended rev range: Minimum 1800, maximum 5200.

Further to my last message, my cams are AAA3096 or Crane 340-
0002. Skip's figures are correct and like Mike Card said there was
a typo on my part. Although I got them from B&G, they were in
Crane cartons with all crane information and I previously spoke to
Crane on the phone who confirmed that they supplied these to
B&G and others. They suggested 2 sets of valve clearances. 16
and 18 or 18 and 20. I've been running happily on 16 and 18 but the
valve gear continues to speak to me in typical XPAG fashion. I
would guess that Skip's 18 will be a good compromise. All the
Crane data stress that their cam should only be installed with new
followers.

Hi all,
Am looking to buy a NOS Crane cam for the XPAG Serial No. BF1831 grind
972041 I think. Anyone know what state of tune it is? Standard, half race?
Regards,
Ron Benson.

Greetings et al,
The reason I was asking about the cam was because I was bidding for it on E
Bay, I asked the question about which one it was to the seller, but received
no reply. Suffice to say I was outbid! It appeared to be very old stock and
thats why the numbers did not tally. I am at present running the AEG122 cam
in the TB which according to Mike Sherrell is almost the same as standard
TC. Many thanks for your replies.
Regards,
Ron Benson

Dear Group
A word of caution if you are going to fit a new Crane Camshaft into an XPAG.
When I completely rebuilt my engine 8617 the camshaft I took out was
completely worn out. Replacement was the only option and I settled for a
Crane Cam as the steel used in the cams would be guaranteed quality.
Fitting the cam was no problem the original thrust plate was tightened down
(I assume original because of the ring tone it makes when dropped, good
steel) and the engine turned over by hand for timing purposes. (No details
published of any end float between the thrust plate and the nose of the
cam?)
At a later stage started the engine and ended up with a very noisy tapping
sound. The end float between the cam and the thrust plate was not enough and
the cam had subsequently grabbed causing both securing bolts to shear off
allowing the cam to move forwards and backwards. Engine strip down new
thrust plate fitted cam shoulder machined slightly to increase end float.

Years agoI had fitted a new repro cam gear to an engine and it turned out
that the part numbers cast into it on the backside were higher than original
and were inline with the upper thrust plate bolt bolt and the noise was
not there when turned by hand. What a racket and the noise was immediate and
very rhythmic

Howdy,
Moss Motors is featuring a Crane cam and a lifter set in their photo section
of the catalog update. It sounds good - marketing BS? - but does anyone
have a feel for if these products are indeed good? I installed a Crane
setup 25 years ago and it was fine, but it sounds like Crane is in
transformation....
Where do you guys (and gals) get good valvetrain components for the XPAG?
Cheers, Bill
