To glue, or not to glue

All,
I like the apparent logic of the"let it flex" approach. However, I
can't help but wonder how much flex there really is in a joint which is "...
well-fitted, and fastened with screws..."
Granted, there is a whole bunch of flex when the screws either break,
corrode away, or chew out the wood around them.
It therefore seems to me that some of the truly flexible adhesives might
provide both strength and flex (as well as some protection from water), but
I'd certainly stay clear of the really hard, stiff stuff, which is also
usually brittle.
