TC Door checks

I have finally got the doors mounted on my 46. I've started attaching the other bits and pieces. I am wondering about the door checks. The ones I have (reproductions) have straight rods and they bind and don't let the door open and close completely. The checks on the 49 seem to be bent or curved. I don't want to take the car apart just to investigate further. Am I correct in assuming that I have to bend the check rods so they will not bind? Thanks, Charles Hill

Charles, The photo of the TC's door check that appears in the Illustrated List of Service Parts shows that there is a distinct curve to the rod. It appears to be on a fairly constant gentle curve throughout the length of the rod, rather than an abrupt or sharp bend. (I knew this book was going to come in handy sooner or later! I've been carrying it around for nigh onto 46 years, so I'm delighted to find it useful!!!) Regards to all, Carl Fritz Gainesville,FL

I had the same problem . The checks supplied from Moss are straight. Be carefull not only will they bind , they will push out the door skin from the inside if you are not careful. I reused the old checks from my car. I stupidly thought that because they were bent they were no good. They work fine. Charles

Carl is right, the door checks have a bend to clear the door skin while opening/closing. Gentle bending inwards will result in the door check clearing the door skin and also the approx. 1/2" diameter hole in the door post. Make sure you have the right washer and rubber on the door end of the check while fitting as these items are what touch the door skin. Charles Some years ago I bought some door checks from Moss. They were quite different to the originals, lighter construction, no bend etc. I sent them back and got some from Abingdon Spares. These were well made and as per original. The only problem I had was that I had to remove some material (about 1/32" from memory) from the face that goes against the hinge pillar on the body, so that the hinge point moved back a little. This was to prevent fouling between the knuckle and the recess on the door. Mark Jablonski Melbourne Australia

Thanks for all the informative replies I have received. I spent a couple of hours tonight working on the first one. Took a lot to get it bent just right. Hope it doesn't take quite so long to do the other side. Regards, Charles Hill
