TC HEAD LAMP SEALS

Post by Gates Family » Sat Feb 10, 2001 2:02 am

Hi
I am fitting new rubber seals to my headlamps - the previous set had turned to liquorice - and am somewhat confused about the sequence of re-assembling the components, particularly where and how to situate the seals. Can anyone throw some light on the subject (pun intended)?
Using the Moss catalogue as a reference point, several possibilities arise. 1) the seal could wrap around, and hold together, the reflector and glass lens, but this would prevent a snug fit between the protruding notch on the top side of the reflector and the little recess of the shell rim that ensures a proper vertical alignment. 2) the seal could fit round the glass lens only thus providing a buffer between lens and reflector. 3) the seal could fit onto the shell rim and wrap around both the reflector and glass lens which would facilitate a snug fit between the shell rim recess and reflector notch, . So many permutations exist, and whilst I could resort to logic if all else fails, your own experiences and advice will be helpful!
Also, should there be some type of tape that holds the reflector and lens together to create an almost sealed-beam unit? I removed what seemed to be masking tape a few months to access and polish the reflector's silver surface, but I am not sure whether or not that was original or the fruits of a PO's genius.
